Kraken Win Showed A Deeper Threat Than Fans Realized

The Seattle Kraken showed impressive depth and skill, highlighted by Lane Lamberts milestone and standout performances that sealed their triumphant night in Philadelphia.

Lane Lambert picked up his 100th win as an NHL head coach, and the Kraken had plenty else to like in Seattle’s game in Philadelphia even if the night ended in a shootout.

The numbers tell the story of a team that kept generating across the roster. Through three games on this road trip, 11 different Kraken players have scored, 16 have at least one point, and eight have multiple points. That kind of spread matters, and it showed again here.

At 5-on-5, Seattle basically split the ice with Philadelphia. The Kraken produced 48.9 percent of all shot volume and 48.9 percent of all shot quality. They also held their own in the dangerous areas, creating 17 high-danger scoring chances while giving up 15.

Philipp Grubauer was a big reason the game stayed close. He stopped 24 of 26 shots, faced 56 shot attempts overall, and prevented 1.3 more goals than expected. It was his third quality start of the season, and every start he’s made this year has qualified as one.

There was also a milestone for Ville Ottavainen, who scored his first NHL goal in his fifth game. Mackie Samoskevich picked up the primary assist for his first helper as a member of the Kraken on that play.

That wasn’t the only strong work from Samoskevich. He, Bobby McMann, and Matty Beniers formed a highly productive line, with the trio logging 11:28 together and finishing plus-14 in shot attempts while generating 99.8 percent of the shot quality. McMann scored the game’s opening goal and later added the shootout winner, giving him 13 goals - the most by a Kraken player through the first 25 games of a season, ahead of Jordan Eberle and Jared McCann, who each had 12.

Beniers quietly drove a lot of the puck movement. He led all skaters in offensive zone possession time, and he also had a team-high seven controlled zone entries and 10 controlled zone exits. McCann, meanwhile, led the team in individual shot quality.

By the end of the night, the top three skaters by Game Score, according to hockeystatcards.com, were Samoskevich, McCann, and Beniers.

Kraken Just Proved How Dangerous This Road Trip Could Be

The Krakens road trip got a little more interesting Tuesday night in Philadelphia, where Seattle handled a hard-earned 3-2 shootout win over the Flyers at Xfinity Mobile Arena. It was the kind of result that can steady a team early in the season, especially with Seattle moving to 5-2-0 and showing it can find a way through a tight game away from home.

Philipp Grubauer gave the Kraken the backbone they needed, coming up with key stops and keeping Philadelphia in check during the shootout as the Flyers dropped their eighth straight. The game stayed tense deep into the extra frame before Seattle finally separated itself, a reminder that this trip could hinge on a few moments just like this. [Read more 🡒]

Flyers Effort Finally Showed Up But One Problem Isnt Going Away

The Flyers finally brought the kind of edge and push their season had been missing when they met the Kraken, and for once the effort matched the urgency. After opening 2026-27 with seven straight losses, a franchise-record slide, Philadelphia at least gave itself a chance by digging out of a two-goal third-period hole and turning a game that had been drifting into something far more competitive. Goaltender Dan Vlada steadied the group with a string of important stops, helping keep the game within reach long enough for the comeback to even matter.

Seattle still left with the result, and that is the part Philadelphia cannot escape no matter how much better it looked for stretches. The Flyers are now winless through eight games, and while the response against the Kraken suggested there is still some life in the room, the larger problem remains unchanged: better effort is only a start when the standings already show a season in danger of slipping away fast.
