Kraken Sent A Loud Message In Their Home Opener

The Seattle Kraken dominated their home opener with a resounding 6-1 victory over the Calgary Flames, showcasing an explosive start and stellar performances from key players.

The Seattle Kraken opened their home schedule with the same formula that worked in Calgary, and it produced the same result: another lopsided win over the Flames.

Seattle jumped all over Calgary early Sunday at Climate Pledge Arena, scoring three times in the first eight minutes on the way to a 6-1 victory. Berkly Catton started the surge, Mackie Samoskevich added the first of his two goals, and Bobby McMann joined in before the first period was even five minutes old. Joey Daccord backed it up again in net with 32 saves.

The crowd got plenty to celebrate from the start, and Daccord gave them reasons to get louder as the night went on. After one glove save, Ryan Lindgren and Freddy Gaudreau earned stick taps for clearing his sightline. Later, after a tougher post-to-post stop on Adam Klapka’s wraparound, the building broke into chants of “Joey, Joey.”

Daccord’s shutout was broken in the third period, but not before he had already put together another strong outing. In Calgary on Oct. 1, his shutout lasted 57 minutes before Ryan Strome scored. This time, Daccord turned aside Igor Sharangovich’s difficult redirection before Morgan Frost finally beat him on the power play with 5:35 left.

Seattle never gave Calgary much breathing room. Catton opened the scoring with a left-circle shot across his body, with Shane Wright and Kaapo Kakko on his line.

Samoskevich then showed off his speed, chasing down Brandon Montour’s floating clear behind the Flames defense and finishing with a backhand for his first Kraken goal. McMann made it 3-0, scoring for the second straight game.

The second period brought more of the same. Wright extended the lead with a no-look backhand from the slot after Catton set him up, and Samoskevich struck again 26 seconds before intermission to make it 5-0.

Calgary finally got on the board when Ville Ottavainen, playing his first Kraken game of the season, was called for high sticking and Frost cashed in on the power play. Seattle answered almost immediately. Jordan Eberle needed just 39 seconds to restore the five-goal cushion, snapping a perfectly placed shot under the crossbar from the top of the right circle.

The home opener also came on the second night of back-to-back games for both teams, after each lost Saturday. And the results from the two meetings with Calgary have been emphatic: the Kraken have outscored the Flames 12-2.

Dustin Wolf stopped 21 shots for Calgary, while Seattle’s two-point night club included Samoskevich, Catton, Brandon Montour, and Chandler Stephenson.

There was also a notable off-ice moment when Sonics legend Detlef Schrempf drew a huge ovation from the video board, and Seattle Mariner Josh Nailor was in attendance.

Jacob Melanson did not dress because of injury, while Josh Mahura, Cale Fleury, and Ben Meyers were healthy scratches.

Seattle finished with 27 shots to Calgary’s 33, and the Kraken went 0-for-0 on the power play while the Flames were 1-for-2.

The two-game homestand wraps up Tuesday against the Vegas Golden Knights, with puck drop set for 6:40 pm.

Kraken Let Another Winnable Night In Edmonton Slip Away

The Kraken had a chance to leave Edmonton with a result after Bobby McMann dragged them level in the second period and Philipp Grubauer kept them in it with 22 saves, including several important stops while killing penalties. For stretches, Seattle did enough to make Rogers Place feel winnable, even against a high-end Oilers team that can punish small openings.

But the night tilted late in the third, and the margin for error vanished in a hurry. Seattle could not find the response after Edmonton seized control again, turning what had been a competitive road game into another reminder that the Kraken are still trying to piece together the kind of finish that turns close nights into points. Flames Already Face A Pressure Test With Young Forwards Up Front

The Flames have spent the opening stretch of the 2026-27 season trying to find traction while leaning on a younger group up front, a spot made even trickier by the absence of veteran winger Jonathan Huberdeau. Calgary has already dropped its first two games and has had issues closing out shifts defensively, the kind of early-season slippage that can put pressure on a lineup still sorting out its top-six mix under coach Ryan Huska.

Seattle is part of a tough early run for Calgary, which also has Colorado and Anaheim looming on the schedule. The Kraken already have a feel for where the Flames are vulnerable, especially if Calgary cannot clean up its neutral-zone defense and get more reliable execution when games tighten late, and the next few outings will say plenty about how ready the younger forwards are to carry a larger load. Vince Dunn Landed On A Rare List In Kraken's Opener

Opening night against Calgary gave Vince Dunn another early-season spotlight, even if it came with a small twist. The Kraken defenseman scored Seattles second goal and added two assists in a 6-1 win, reinforcing how central he remains to the blue line whenever the games start to matter.

He also came close to a piece of NHL history that would have stood out even more than the box score, since he nearly became the only defenseman to open three straight seasons by scoring first for his team. Instead, Seattle got its first goal from another skater just before Dunn struck, and the moment now sits as one more reminder that the Krakens opener already had a little bit of everything going.
