Kraken Just Proved How Dangerous This Road Trip Could Be

The Seattle Kraken continue their impressive road streak with a dramatic shootout victory over the still-struggling Philadelphia Flyers.

The Seattle Kraken kept the road trip rolling Tuesday night, outlasting the Philadelphia Flyers 3-2 in a shootout at Xfinity Mobile Arena to stay perfect away from home on the trip.

Seattle had a 2-0 lead in the third period and still needed extra work after the winless Flyers clawed all the way back. But in the fifth round of the shootout, McMann delivered the finish, and Matty Beniers added another shootout goal to help the Kraken escape with their third straight road win and a 5-2-0 start to the season.

Philipp Grubauer was a major reason Seattle left with two points. After backing up a 37-save win in Detroit, he stopped 24 Flyers shots Tuesday and turned aside four of five Philadelphia shooters in the shootout. His strongest stretch came in the second period, when he twice denied Sean Couturier, including a sharp stop on a one-timer and later a poke-check after a Brandon Montour turnover left Couturier alone in front.

The Kraken’s scoring started in the first period with McMann’s third goal of the season. On a power play, a puck popped up, bounced off the ice, and McMann swatted it out of the air into the top corner with excellent hand-eye coordination.

Seattle got another boost in the second when defenseman Ville Ottavainen scored the first NHL goal of his career. Sprung by a Jared McCann and Beniers screen in front, Ottavainen fired down the slot to make it 2-0.

The game shifted in the third. Christian Dvorak got Philadelphia on the board with a one-timer from the right circle after Oliver Bonk delivered a no-look lateral pass from the far boards. Just 1:13 later, Trevor Zegras tied it 2-2 by beating Grubauer as the trailer flying down the slot.

Seattle had chances to put the game away before that comeback. Jordan Eberle was tripped on a breakaway in the second after Adam Larsson sent him in with a lead pass, but Dan Vladar stopped Eberle’s penalty shot attempt.

The Kraken also failed to cash in on a 5-on-3, and later couldn’t score on a Flyers too-many-men penalty in overtime. Eberle also took two minors, though Seattle killed both off.

The night had a little extra edge, too. Grubauer and Zegras mixed it up in the middle period after an earlier skirmish.

Grubauer gloved a Zegras wrister, released the puck for a face-off, and Zegras fired it back at him. Grubauer answered with a cross-check, and both players were assessed minors.

For Philadelphia, the loss extended a brutal opening to the season. The Flyers dropped to 0-5-3 and were booed after falling behind.

A few more notes from the night: Eberle has recorded a point in six of Seattle’s seven games, piling up three goals and three assists. The Kraken are now 7-3-1 all-time against Philadelphia. And their two losses this season have come against Vegas and Edmonton, the only teams they’ve faced so far that don’t use red as their primary color.

Seattle finished 1-for-5 on the power play, while Philadelphia went 0-for-3.

The road trip wraps up in Florida, with the Kraken visiting the Lightning on Thursday at 4 pm PT and the Panthers on Saturday at 3 pm PT.

Kraken Win Showed A Deeper Threat Than Fans Realized

Lane Lambert reached a milestone behind the bench in a recent Kraken victory, and the win had the kind of spread-out scoring that can make a team look a lot deeper than a one-night highlight would suggest. Seattle got contributions all over the lineup, with 11 players finding the net and 16 collecting points, while Philipp Grubauer turned in a solid night in goal and Ville Ottavainen added a memorable touch by scoring his first NHL goal.

Bobby McMann also left his mark on the game in a way Seattle will not mind revisiting, giving the matchup another layer beyond the usual box score read. His night included a franchise note that speaks to how quickly he has settled in, and he later delivered the finish that decided it in the shootout, the kind of result that can quiet plenty of questions about how far this Kraken group can stretch its offense. Flyers Effort Finally Showed Up But One Problem Isnt Going Away

The Flyers finally brought the kind of edge and push their season had been missing when they met the Kraken, and for once the effort matched the urgency. After opening 2026-27 with seven straight losses, a franchise-record slide, Philadelphia at least gave itself a chance by digging out of a two-goal third-period hole and turning a game that had been drifting into something far more competitive. Goaltender Dan Vlada steadied the group with a string of important stops, helping keep the game within reach long enough for the comeback to even matter.

Seattle still left with the result, and that is the part Philadelphia cannot escape no matter how much better it looked for stretches. The Flyers are now winless through eight games, and while the response against the Kraken suggested there is still some life in the room, the larger problem remains unchanged: better effort is only a start when the standings already show a season in danger of slipping away fast.
