Connor Hellebuyck’s situation may be nearing the finish line, and the timeline is getting tighter by the hour. According to NHL and TSN insider Darren Dreger, a trade could happen within the next 24 hours.
Dreger wrote on Friday afternoon, “Okay, twist in the plot. Connor Hellebuyck trade talks are escalating it could go down today.
Busy day developing. Stay tuned,”
That update came on the heels of Dreger’s report from Thursday, when he said, “There’s a sense there could be an agreement between the Jets and Hellebuyck to delay his physical until a later date out of respect to the Heritage Classic. This weekend is about the game. Meanwhile, the focus to trade the star goalie remains.”
Elliotte Friedman also weighed in, saying in a tweet that the Hellebuyck saga is now coming to an end.
As for where the goalie might land, several teams have been tied to him. The Carolina Hurricanes and Buffalo Sabres have come up, and the Utah Mammoth have also been mentioned in recent days. The New York Rangers could be in the mix for a goaltender, though the belief is they would need a third party involved in a three-team deal that sends Hellebuyck elsewhere.
Friedman reported that the Hurricanes have an offer on the table for Hellebuyck, and it does not include Alexander Nikishin.
The San Jose Sharks and Los Angeles Kings were also linked, though it was unclear whether Hellebuyck would be willing to accept a move to the Sharks.
One other factor is now in play: Hellebuyck’s suspension lifts on Friday. That means he could opt to return to the Jets, which is not what they want. At the same time, the Jets also do not want to keep paying his salary while he stays home, which would be the outcome if he is no longer suspended.

Sharks Top Line Suddenly Has A Worry Fans Didn't Need
The Sharks top line picked up an unwelcome concern when Igor Chernyshov went down after blocking a shot and left the game early, with no return. San Jose already had enough to manage without another lineup question, and now there is at least some uncertainty hanging over one of the forwards the team has been leaning on as it prepares for Ottawa.
Chernyshov is doubtful to be available for the next game, and the club is expected to provide a clearer update either after the game or ahead of the matchup with the Senators. If he needs more time, Adam Gaudette would be the likely next man up, giving the Sharks another decision to sort through as they try to keep the group steady in a short turnaround. [Read more 🡒]
Sharks Finally Ended One Drought But A Bigger Question Remains
The Sharks finally got themselves on the right side of the scoreboard in Ottawa, rolling past the Senators 6-2 at the Canadian Tire Centre in a game that had plenty of offense and a few momentum turns along the way. Nolan Allan, Tyler Toffoli, Collin Graf, Jacob Trouba, Zack Ostapchuk and Ivar Stenberg all found the net, while Yaroslav Askarov helped keep the lead intact with a steady night in goal.
For San Jose, the win offered a needed jolt, but it came with a couple of concerns layered into the result. Igor Chernyshov and Ty Dellandrea both left with in-game injury issues, leaving the Sharks to sort out a short-term picture that felt bigger than the final score. Even after a road victory like this, the more important question now is what comes next if the lineup keeps getting tested. [Read more 🡒]
