A Nikita Kucherov trade would grab attention in San Jose in a hurry, but the fit just isn’t there right now.
Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman reported that the Tampa Bay Lightning winger requested a trade out of the organization, and the idea of pairing him with Macklin Celebrini and Will Smith is the kind of setup that looks great on paper. Still, the Sharks are not in a position where a move like that makes practical sense.
For one thing, San Jose is still dealing with much bigger problems than adding a star winger. Last night’s game against the Vancouver Canucks showed that clearly, with the Sharks struggling to put away the worst team in the league.
If they were already operating like a true Stanley Cup contender, Kucherov would be an obvious boost. They are not there yet.
The cap situation is another obstacle. To make room for Kucherov, the Sharks would need to clear money off the roster, and Dmitry Orlov looks like the most obvious candidate.
But Orlov has struggled so far, and at this point San Jose might even need to attach an asset just to move him. Even then, the number itself only gets you part of the way there.
Kucherov’s current $9.5 million cap hit is below market value for the reigning Hart Trophy winner, which means his next deal could be a major jump. It could even resemble Celebrini’s contract, though likely on a shorter term.
Age matters too. Kucherov is 33, and the Sharks have already committed long-term to Mason Marchment, Alex Wennberg and Kiefer Sherwood. With all three holding full no-trade clauses, bringing in yet another veteran forward would chip away at the team’s flexibility and make it harder to keep developing younger players for the long haul.
The more pressing need is elsewhere. San Jose’s 5-on-5 scoring has been an issue, but the source of that problem appears more tied to usage than to a lack of talent.
The bigger target should be the blue line, where the Sharks still do not have a player projected to be a true number-one defenseman. That is why the reports connecting them to Detroit Red Wings defenseman Simon Edvinsson make more sense as a use of assets.
Kucherov in teal would be fun, no question. But spending heavily for a couple of playoff runs that probably still would not end with a Stanley Cup in San Jose does not sound like the right move.
Mike Grier should at least check in on the reigning MVP, because that would be part of the job. But this should stay a conversation, not a transaction.

Sharks Got The Win But This Performance Should Worry Fans
The Sharks walked out with a 3-2 win over Vancouver, but the way they got there offered plenty for fans to chew on. San Jose spent much of the night chasing the game and was outplayed for long stretches before finally finding life late, with Will Smith scoring twice and Mason Marchment adding the go-ahead goal to turn a shaky outing into a victory.
Even with the comeback, the performance did not look like one that can be repeated often. Vancouvers Leevi Merilainen made a series of key saves to keep the Sharks in it, and San Jose still had to survive a late power play before closing it out. The result counts in the standings, but the process left enough warning signs to make this one feel more like a rescue than a statement. [Read more 🡒]
Sharks Got The Response They Needed In A Game Fans Will Remember
The Sharks got the kind of response they badly needed at SAP Center, edging the Vancouver Canucks 3-2 in a game that had enough twists to stick with the crowd for a while. Will Smith scored twice and Mason Marchment added the other San Jose goal, giving the home side a timely offensive lift in a night that featured plenty of key plays and line shuffling as the game unfolded.
What made the win feel bigger than a single result was the way San Jose kept finding answers as the game tightened up. The Sharks leaned on Smiths finishing touch and Marchments contribution to stay in front, and the victory offered a reminder that this group can still generate the kind of push that changes the mood around the building. There was also a notable first for one young player in the lineup, adding another layer to a game fans are likely to remember for more than just the score. [Read more 🡒]
Filip Bystedt Finally Gave Sharks Fans A Glimpse Of Something More
Filip Bystedts NHL debut gave Sharks fans a small but meaningful glimpse of what the organization has been waiting to see. The young center logged 10:28 in his first game with San Jose and wasted little time making an impression, jumping into the action with a scoring chance right out of the gate. It was the kind of opening shift that gets a building leaning forward, even if the puck never found the net.
Bystedt said afterward that the moment meant a lot to him, and the milestone carried a personal touch as well, with his parents in the building to watch it unfold. He did not come away with a goal, but the debut still mattered as a marker in his development and a reminder that San Jose may have another piece worth tracking closely as his NHL story begins.
