The Sharks wrapped up the Rookie Faceoff on Sunday with another win, and this one had a little more grind to it.
San Jose beat the Utah Mammoth 3-1 at Tech CU Arena to finish the tournament with two victories. After rolling past Los Angeles 8-1 to open the event, the Sharks were pushed into a tighter, more physical matchup against Utah and still found a way to come out on top.
Jake Gustafson was the headliner. The sixth-round pick scored twice, including a goal with 1.5 seconds left in the first period, and gave San Jose the kind of finishing touch that stands out in a short tournament like this. Quentin Musty also scored, adding an empty-net goal with 29 seconds left to lock it down.
Utah made the Sharks work for it. The Mammoth outshot San Jose 29-22 and kept the game heavy throughout, but the Sharks’ chances carried more weight. Carson Wetsch stayed right in the middle of that edge, fighting twice before he was ejected.
“A little scramblier, a little more physical,” Head Coach John McCarthy said.
That description fit the night, but it also fit much of what San Jose showed over the course of the Rookie Faceoff. Gustafson supplied the offense.
Musty kept battling through contact and into tough areas of the ice. Wetsch brought the bite.
McCarthy liked the way the group handled the tournament overall.
“I liked a lot of guys,” he said. “I didn’t think there was anyone that really stood out negatively.”
Wetsch’s night, in particular, matched the tone San Jose set from the start. After the two fights and the game misconduct, McCarthy backed the way he responded.
“He did what he thought was right, and as I said, we support him,” McCarthy said.
The Sharks left the Rookie Faceoff with two wins and a clearer picture of how different prospects can impact a game in different ways. Gustafson scored, Musty contributed in a key moment, and Wetsch showed the kind of willingness to stand up for teammates that the staff clearly noticed.
Now the focus shifts to training camp this upcoming week.
“Real bullets start flying next week, so I guess that’s an exciting time here,” McCarthy said.
