Sharks Road Trip Opener Suddenly Hinges On A Troubling Blue Line Issue

The Sharks head to Nashville with uncertain roster dynamics as they aim to break a two-game losing streak and start their road trip on a strong note.

The Sharks open a six-game road trip in Nashville with their lineup still very much in motion, and the biggest question hanging over Thursday’s game is whether Darnell Nurse can go.

San Jose coach Ryan Warsofsky told San Jose Hockey Now that Nurse has an upper-body injury from Tuesday’s fight with Nikita Zadorov and will be a game-time decision at Bridgestone Arena. Nurse left the Sharks’ 6-3 loss to the Boston Bruins after taking several hard punches in the altercation and never returned to the game.

Warsofsky didn’t have an update on Nurse after Tuesday night’s loss, and San Jose did not practice Wednesday before heading to Nashville. Because Nurse was able to travel and the injury is not considered serious, the Sharks didn’t have to bring anyone up from the Barracuda.

Nurse is third on the team in average ice time at 20:35, and he took rushes with Michael Kesselring during Thursday morning skate. San Jose is also trying to avoid its first three-game skid of the season after dropping games to Boston and the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday.

There could be another defensive shuffle even if Nurse is ready. Luca Cagnoni, who has one goal and one assist in six games, could come out after being on the ice for Boston’s first three goals. Warsofsky benched him for the final 10 minutes of the second period, though he did not pin all of those goals on Cagnoni.

Cagnoni has handled the point on the Sharks’ top power-play unit and has been averaging just under 19 minutes a night. If he’s removed, Nolan Allan would likely step in after sitting as a healthy scratch for the last four games. Allan has been on the outside looking in while Sam Dickinson earned a lineup spot after missing the first two games.

In goal, Alex Nedeljkovic is set for his second start of the season. He has a 5-4-0 record and a .908 save percentage in nine career games against Nashville.

Last season, he split two starts against the Predators and stopped 39 of 47 shots for an .830 save percentage. He also made 24 saves in San Jose’s 3-2 overtime win over the St.

Louis Blues last Thursday.

Yaroslav Askarov, who had started five of the Sharks’ first six games, struggled in the loss to Boston, allowing five goals on 25 shots. He is 2-3-0 with an .848 save percentage in his five starts.

The trip keeps rolling after Nashville, with games against the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday, the Toronto Maple Leafs on Monday, and the Montreal Canadiens next Tuesday. San Jose then finishes the trip with stops in Ottawa on Sept. 22 and Boston on Sept. 24.

The Sharks also made a roster move Thursday, sending forwards Alex Barre-Boulet and Cam Lund to the Barracuda. Lund, who is dealing with an upper-body injury and started the season on the non-roster list, was hurt at the Sharks’ Rookie Faceoff event at Tech CU Arena in September. Barre-Boulet had been on injured reserve, did not appear in a preseason game, went on waivers Wednesday, and cleared Thursday.

The Barracuda, who are 1-4-0-0, play the Calgary Wranglers at home on Friday.

Senators Lose William Eklund Just As Their New Depth Gets Tested

The Senators injury picture keeps shifting, and the latest blow came with William Eklund undergoing surgery to repair a torn tendon in his ankle. Ottawa expects the former Sharks forward to miss 10 to 12 weeks, removing one of the early pieces it had counted on after acquiring him from San Jose in June. Eklund had already put up a goal and an assist in four games with his new club this season.

Ottawa is trying to absorb that loss while getting some reinforcements back on the blue line, with Artem Zub set for his 2026-27 season debut after a knee injury and Cameron Crotty activated from injured reserve. For a team still sorting out its depth, the timing makes Eklunds absence especially difficult, because the Senators were beginning to lean on the middle of the lineup just as another layer of the roster gets tested. Flyers Trade Buzz Puts The Spotlight On One Tough Roster Question

Will Smith remains in open contract extension talks, and for now the Sharks are treating it as a wait-and-see situation with no timeline or deadline attached. It is the kind of business that tends to hover in the background rather than dominate the day-to-day, but it still matters for a San Jose club that is always balancing development, future planning and roster stability.

Across the league, the Flyers are looking at ways to reinforce their blue line with a veteran defenseman, though early-season caution appears to be the more realistic path than a major trade. There is also some internal unease around Travis Konecny despite his scoring leadership, which only adds to the sense that Philadelphia may spend the opening stretch trying to sort out its own issues before making any bigger moves. William Eklund's Absence Just Changed Both Sharks Matchups With Ottawa

William Eklunds absence adds another layer to what was already a notable stretch for San Jose against Ottawa. The winger, traded from the Sharks to the Senators in June, had been off to a strong start before getting hurt on Oct. 8, and now Ottawa coach Travis Green says he will miss 10-12 weeks after ankle tendon surgery. It is the kind of setback that reshapes a matchup before the puck even drops, especially when a familiar face is suddenly taken out of the picture.

For the Sharks, it changes the look of both meetings with a player they know well, even if only from a brief chapter in his career. Eklund had been one of the more encouraging early developments for Ottawa, so his absence removes a key offensive piece from the Senators lineup and leaves the two games with a different tone than expected. San Jose will still be focused on the result, but the storyline around the matchup now carries a little more weight because of what is missing. [Read more 🡒]
