San Jose Sharks fans have plenty to be excited about as their prospect, defenseman Eric Pohlkamp, has emerged as one of the three finalists for the prestigious Hobey Baker Award, the top individual accolade in U.S. college hockey.
Pohlkamp, a standout junior at Denver University, has been lighting up the NCAA with his offensive prowess. This season, he's the top-scoring defenseman, racking up 18 goals and 21 assists over 41 games for the Pioneers. His impressive performance has not only put him in the running for the Hobey Baker but also helped Denver secure a spot in the Frozen Four.
Joining Pohlkamp in the Hobey Baker Hat Trick are Minnesota-Duluth forward Max Plante, a Detroit Red Wings draftee, and Michigan's senior forward TJ Hughes. The winner will be announced on April 10 in Las Vegas, coinciding with the Frozen Four festivities.
Reflecting on the award's legacy, Macklin Celebini's remarkable achievement as a 17-year-old winner in 2024 comes to mind. Celebini, who was later picked first overall by the Sharks, is now a top scorer in the NHL, underscoring the caliber of talent recognized by the Hobey Baker.
Pohlkamp, selected by the Sharks in the fifth round of the 2023 draft, has been a force on the ice. He leads the nation with 185 shots and was named the National Collegiate Hockey Conference’s Offensive Defenseman of the Year. His defensive contributions are just as noteworthy, with a team-leading 77 blocked shots.
The selection process for the Hobey Baker finalists involves a 30-member committee, which evaluates players on their skills, character, sportsmanship, and academic achievements.
Denver's journey to the Frozen Four included decisive victories against Cornell and top-seeded Western Michigan. With Pohlkamp stepping up as the leader on the blue line, following in the footsteps of Vancouver Canucks' Zeev Buium, the Pioneers are eyeing another national title.
Pohlkamp's international experience includes representing the U.S. at the Spengler Cup in Switzerland, showcasing his skills on a global stage.
As Denver prepares to face Michigan in the national semifinals on April 9, Pohlkamp is focused on ending his college career on a high note before transitioning to the professional ranks. His determination was evident during the Sharks’ development camp, where he expressed his eagerness to step into a larger role.
Sharks GM Mike Grier has been impressed by Pohlkamp's energy and leadership, noting his commanding presence on the ice. With such a promising trajectory, Pohlkamp is poised to make waves in the NHL soon.
