SAN JOSE - The San Jose Sharks are navigating some lineup uncertainties as they prepare to face the Anaheim Ducks in a crucial six-game homestand. Winger Igor Chernyshov is battling an illness, leaving his status for Wednesday's game up in the air. Coach Ryan Warsofsky labeled him a game-time decision after Chernyshov skipped the team’s optional skate.
If Chernyshov can't hit the ice, the Sharks will look to Ty Dellandrea, who’s been sidelined for nearly three months with a torn right posterior cruciate ligament. Dellandrea was just activated from injured reserve, ready to make his return.
Chernyshov, who bounced back from a head injury sustained on March 14 against the Canadiens, has been a key player on the Sharks’ top line with Macklin Celebrini and Will Smith. In just four games back, he’s netted two goals and an assist, bringing his season total to 14 points in 20 games. His recent heroics include scoring both goals in a tight 3-2 win over the Blue Jackets, including the clutch game-winner.
Warsofsky is keeping his cards close to the chest regarding Dellandrea’s potential role. Before his injury, Dellandrea was a staple as the third-line center, known for his penalty-killing prowess and faceoff skills. In his absence, rookie Michael Misa has taken on those responsibilities, contributing 13 points over 28 games, though he’s currently in a seven-game point slump.
In net, Yaroslav Askarov will get the start as the Sharks aim for their third consecutive victory, following a thrilling 5-4 win against the Blues. With 75 points, the Sharks are in 11th place in the Western Conference, just two points shy of a wild card spot.
The homestand is packed with challenges, including matchups against the Maple Leafs, Predators, Blackhawks, and Oilers.
Meanwhile, the Ducks, leading the Pacific Division with 87 points, will be missing forward Cutter Gauthier due to a lower-body injury sustained against the Maple Leafs. Gauthier, who’s Anaheim’s top scorer with 38 goals and 65 points, is not expected to be out long. The Sharks will face the Ducks again in Anaheim on April 9.
