The San Jose Sharks have added another name to their goaltending mix, signing Ilya Samsonov to a one-year, two-way contract for the 2026-27 season.
For Samsonov, it’s a shot at getting back to the NHL after spending last season with HK Sochi in Russia’s KHL. The 29-year-old last played in the NHL with the Vegas Golden Knights, and before that he logged two seasons with the Toronto Maple Leafs and three with the Washington Capitals.
His most recent run in North America came with plenty of baggage, and the move overseas didn’t exactly smooth things out. Samsonov joined Sochi in November, then was pulled after two periods in his debut because of low conditioning, he told RMNB.
He got back in the crease in nine of the next 10 games, but the results were uneven: one shutout, two wins, and 24 goals against. That stretch pushed him into a backup role, and he finished with just 14 appearances for Sochi.
In those games, he posted three wins, a .903 save percentage, and a 3.27 goals-against average.
Still, the door isn’t shut on an NHL comeback. A two-way deal means Samsonov will have to stay in top shape if he wants to climb back to the league’s top level.
He’s already shown what he can do when things click. In 2022-23 with Toronto, Samsonov put up 27 wins and a .919 save percentage in 42 games, his best season by far.
Even so, that kind of production has been the exception more than the rule: across seven NHL seasons, he’s only finished above .900 in save percentage two other times. Overall, he owns a .902 save percentage, a 2.77 goals-against average, and a 118-48-25 record in the NHL.
San Jose’s goalie picture is already crowded, which makes Samsonov’s path even tougher. Alex Nedeljkovic and Eric Comrie are both in the mix for the backup job behind Yaroslav Askarov.
Nedeljkovic gave the Sharks a solid complement to Askarov last season, while Comrie brings veteran experience and a steady backup profile. The team could even start the year with both on the NHL roster to keep its options open.
If that happens, Samsonov would likely begin as the AHL starter and battle Kyle Keyser for work with the San Jose Barracuda. And if one of the other goalies grabs the backup job in San Jose, Samsonov would be fighting the other for minutes in the AHL. Either way, his route back to the NHL looks like it will depend on someone ahead of him getting hurt or slipping.

With that kind of commitment in place, Allan is likely to stay on the radar as a depth option for the NHL club, especially if injuries start opening up spots, and the Sharks now have to decide how long they want to leave a player like that in limbo before the next move becomes unavoidable.
