Carter Meyer is still years away from the NHL, but the 2027 draft prospect already has a clear blueprint in mind: Macklin Celebrini.
That connection makes sense on a few levels. Meyer told The Hockey News' Ryan Kennedy, “I was around when [Celebrini] was [at Boston University], and that was so fun to watch,” Meyer told The Hockey News' Ryan Kennedy. “As a center and 200-foot player, it’s hard not to want to model your game after him.”
The link between the two goes beyond style. Meyer, like Celebrini and his father Freddy Meyer, is committed to Boston University, with Meyer set to arrive for the 2028-29 season.
Celebrini was at BU during the 2023-24 season, when Meyer was still with the Boston Jr. Eagles 14U AAA team.
The two also match up physically in a pretty striking way. Both are listed at exactly six feet, with Celebrini carrying just 14 more pounds than Meyer.
Meyer’s profile has already started to rise. In his first ranking for the 2027 Draft, Daily Faceoff’s Steven Ellis placed him fifth and described him this way: "He’s a smart, hard-working forward who plays a reliable two-way game while hitting everyone in sight," Daily Faceoff's Steven Ellis wrote of Meyer, ranking him fifth in his first ranking for the 2027 Draft. "He’s not even that big - he’s just strong and willing to throw his body at everyone."
For now, Meyer is taking a different route before he gets to Boston. Instead of staying with the United States National Team Development Program, he has chosen to join the Quebec Remparts for the 2026-27 season.
Meyer is one of the first top prospects to openly point to Celebrini as the model for his own game, but he likely won’t be the last. That kind of comparison feels like it’s only going to show up more and more soon.
