Tate McRae and Jack Hughes have reportedly ended their relationship, but the story around the breakup is already split into two very different versions.
Page Six’s Martha Williams reported that the Devils center has told friends he was the one who walked away. According to a source, Hughes grew uneasy after spotting “red flags” and has already begun seeing other people.
But sources close to McRae told Page Six the opposite, saying the 23-year-old singer was the one who “pulled the plug.” Neither side has publicly confirmed who ended things.
Williams put it bluntly: “ It’s all over before it started.”
The reported split closes the book on months of speculation about the pair. Hughes is said to have first reached out to McRae through direct messages before the two were later seen together in New York. Their relationship became tougher to keep under wraps last winter, when McRae showed up at Devils games to support Hughes and the two were also spotted at a West Village restaurant.
In March, a source told Us Weekly that the two had been “casually seeing each other” since late 2025. That same source said they were “exclusively seeing each other” at the time.
McRae had mostly stayed quiet about the relationship even as interest kept building. She recently spoke to Variety about protecting her personal life, saying, “ I try to keep my relationships as sacred and private as possible,” McRae said when she was asked about her relationship status.
“I love the people in my life. They love me.
You just try to keep that circle as positive and supportive as possible. And the outside noise, I can’t do anything about that.
Focusing my energy on something that I can’t control, it just puts me in a bad mood.”
The breakup reports also follow the pair’s appearance at Michael Rubin’s White Party in the Hamptons, where reports that they spent little time together only added to the buzz about their status.
For Hughes, the timing lands in the middle of a big stretch in his career. He heads into the 2026-27 season after helping Team USA win Olympic gold in February, scoring the overtime winner against Canada in the gold-medal game. He also became the fastest player in Devils history to reach 400 career points.
Representatives for Hughes and McRae have not commented on the reported breakup, leaving the exact circumstances of the split unresolved for now.
