Macklin Celebrini’s latest cardboard chase is barreling toward half a million dollars, and it still has room to climb.
The card in question is a 2024-25 Upper Deck Young Guns Outburst Gold #451, a 1/1 that has turned into the centerpiece of a serious auction run on Goldin. With buyer’s premium included, it’s already sitting at $488,000, and there are still about two days left before it closes Saturday night, Aug. 15, with extended bidding.
What makes the number even louder is where it started: around $15,000. From there, it has climbed steadily and left every other Celebrini card price far behind, including the previous high of roughly $85,000 for a The Cup patch auto.
That kind of run makes sense when the card is this rare. Young Guns has become hockey’s modern “true rookie” set, and the Outburst Gold 1/1 is the top of the mountain within that line.
There is only one. For collectors, that turns the card into a grail rather than just another big rookie pull.
Celebrini’s name carries the market with it, too. The San Jose Sharks’ 2024 first overall pick burst into the league with 63 points in 70 games as a rookie, then followed it with a massive second season at age 19: 115 points, including 45 goals and 70 assists.
That production is a huge part of why the auction is being watched so closely. Buyers aren’t just chasing a rookie card.
They’re chasing the face of the Sharks rebuild.
The Gretzky comparisons have already started to follow the bidding, which is its own storyline. The current price is being discussed as possibly the highest ever reached by a non-Wayne Gretzky hockey card, or at least the highest public bid so far.
Gretzky’s rookie cards live in another class entirely, with PSA 10s still in the $1 million to $3.75 million range, so the distinction matters. Still, this auction is tracking like a record chase.
There’s also a bit of extra heat around the sale. The card reportedly had a $600,000 CAD private offer turned down before it went to Goldin.
It was pulled relatively recently in the Chicago area, and now the market is doing the rest. With time still on the clock, the big question is simple: is $500,000 the stopping point, or is this card about to go even higher?
