The San Francisco Giants have stumbled out of the gate this season, starting with back-to-back shutouts. This isn't just a rough patch-it's a historic first for the franchise, stretching back 144 years to its New York roots.
After Friday's 3-0 loss to the Yankees at Oracle Park, Giants manager Vitello acknowledged he might have been a bit too intense in his preseason talk. He shared, "I think some good words were shared, but it’s a little emotional in there, and there’s definitely a lot of try-hards.”
Vitello stands by his players, emphasizing their capabilities despite the lackluster start. "Those guys are fully capable in there," he said. "Their results and numbers look like there’s not a lot of try-hard, but kind of the old baseball adage, there's probably too much."
Giants starter Robbie Ray had a strong start against the Yankees, skillfully maneuvering his pitches. However, the sixth inning proved challenging when Giancarlo Stanton launched a pitch over the left-field wall, securing a 3-0 lead for New York.
The Giants' offense was quiet, managing only a second-inning double by Heliot Ramos. When asked if Vitello's preseason speech might have impacted the team's early performance, Ray was unfazed.
“We’re Major League players,” he stated. “We can handle it.
It’s just one of those things that has happened the first two games. It’s not ideal, but you’ve got 160 games left.”
The Giants will look to bounce back as they wrap up their three-game series against the Yankees on Saturday. The action starts at 7:15 p.m.
ET (4:15 p.m. PT) and will be broadcast on Fox.
