The San Francisco Giants are seeing some standout performances in spring training, and Keaton Winn is making quite the impression. Once pegged as a potential mainstay in the Giants' rotation, the 28-year-old's career has taken a few detours due to injuries, shifting him to bullpen duties. But Winn isn't letting that hold him back, and he might just have Pittsburgh Pirates All-Star Mitch Keller to thank for some of his progress.
Winn recently shared insights about his offseason training alongside Keller, a fellow Iowan. Growing up near each other, the two have developed a camaraderie that extends into their professional lives. Keller, who has been a solid presence in the Pirates' rotation since 2022 and earned All-Star honors in 2023, likely offers Winn a wealth of knowledge and mentorship.
As the 2026 season unfolds, Winn is poised to make his mark with the Giants. In Cactus League action, he's been sharp, allowing just one run over five and a third innings, with three hits, two walks, and five strikeouts. While this might not secure him an Opening Day roster spot-especially with other young talents like Trevor McDonald also shining-it's a promising sign for Winn's future.
A few seasons back, Winn showed potential with his high-velocity fastball and wicked splitter, a combination that seemed destined for success. However, injuries and a tough 2024 season, where he posted a 7.16 ERA in 12 starts, followed by limited appearances in 2025, have kept him on the fringes.
With a new coaching staff led by manager Tony Vitello, Winn is getting a fresh look, and his performance so far is turning heads. Whether he eventually finds a role as a long reliever, spot starter, or another capacity, the Giants' bullpen is fluid enough to offer opportunities. If Winn continues to impress, he could very well secure a spot as the season progresses.
