The San Francisco Giants finally got a positive update on Matt Chapman, and it points toward a healthier start to 2027.
Chapman underwent successful surgery to repair a core muscle that tore off the bone in two places back in April, according to Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports. Pavlovic added that the recovery timeline is about eight to ten weeks.
The injury had been a major factor in how the Giants’ 2026 season unraveled. Chapman was hitting .235 before landing on the injured list, and he never looked quite like the version of himself San Francisco had come to expect. In his first two years with the club, he topped 20 home runs each season and became a key part of the offense.
The turning point came during the Giants’ series against the Arizona Diamondbacks, when Chapman realized he could no longer keep playing through the issue. He was placed on the 60-day IL and eventually needed season-ending surgery.
Manager Tony Vitello said the procedure went smoothly and sounded relieved to have the hardest part behind Chapman.
"Light-hearted mood; it went very well," Vitello said, telling reporters on NBC Sports Bay Area on YouTube about Chapman. "A lot of waiting and seeing and resting and now all that's behind him, and he can move forward.
I'm sure it'll be good to get home to his family. Be good to see him, too."
Chapman is under contract through the 2030 season, so getting him back healthy is a major priority for a Giants team that can now turn its attention to the future. The hope is that when he returns, he’ll be able to produce again at the level the club expects while continuing to bring the same hard-nosed defense and power that made him such an important piece in the first place.
