Logan Webb continued his impressive run in the World Baseball Classic, leading Team USA to a 5-3 victory over Team Canada in the quarterfinals at Daikin Park, Houston. The Giants' ace was in fine form, striking out five batters over 4 2/3 shutout innings. Webb showcased his skill by navigating through early trouble, putting two runners on in the first but striking out Owen Caissie and Abraham Toro to escape unscathed.
In the second inning, Webb allowed a single but ensured Edward Julien didn't get past first base, thanks in part to a stellar defensive play by shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. Webb's command on the mound was evident as he worked efficiently through the Canadian lineup.
Manager Mark DeRosa allowed Webb to start the fifth inning, but with his pitch count climbing, Webb was pulled after walking a batter and securing two outs, leaving to a well-deserved standing ovation from the crowd.
Giants manager Tony Vitello, speaking from Arizona, expressed his satisfaction with Webb's performance, stating, "Not a huge surprise there but definitely great to hear."
In a dugout interview with Ken Rosenthal during the seventh inning, Webb reflected on the high-stakes atmosphere: "It’s a win-or-go-home type of game, playoff atmosphere. It was awesome.
I had a blast out there. It was pretty electric."
Webb's WBC stats are impressive, with just five hits and one earned run allowed, alongside 11 strikeouts in 8 2/3 innings pitched. With the victory, Team USA moves on to face the Dominican Republic in the semifinals at loanDepot park in Miami.
Although Webb isn't expected to pitch again in the tournament, his contributions have been pivotal, and he could return to Giants camp as a world champion.
