As spring training unfolds, SF Giants pitcher Keaton Winn has been on a mission to redefine his role as a reliever. He was making a strong case for himself until a recent hiccup against the Arizona Diamondbacks, which might have thrown a wrench in his plans for the Opening Day roster.
Winn had been impressive, giving up just one run over 6 and 1/3 innings before Saturday’s game. However, against Arizona, he struggled, allowing four earned runs on two walks and two hits, including a home run. This outing could be a setback in his quest to secure a bullpen spot.
While it seems harsh that a single tough game could sway his chances, Winn needed near perfection this spring due to past injuries and inconsistent performances. After a promising MLB debut in 2023, where he started in the rotation, he ended with a 7.16 ERA over 12 starts. The following year didn't bring much improvement, as he posted a 7.90 ERA in 18 minor league appearances.
The 2026 season was meant to be a fresh slate for Winn. He spent the offseason working with fellow Iowan Mitch Keller, gaining clarity on his role.
Despite the rough patch, there’s still potential for a strong season. Even if he doesn’t make the Opening Day cut, starting in Triple-A could provide the platform he needs to prove his worth as a reliever.
It wouldn’t be surprising to see him back with the Giants later this year.
San Francisco is set to start the season with eight relievers, but expect some shuffling as the coaching staff evaluates their options. Winn’s recent struggles might have cost him a spot initially, but he remains a player to watch. With health on his side, he has a real shot at solidifying himself as a reliable bullpen presence as the season progresses.
