Giants Suddenly Have A Catcher Depth Problem To Solve

The SF Giants have begun a significant roster overhaul by sending Andrew Knizner to Sacramento, signaling an active week ahead amid pressing roster deadlines.

The SF Giants kept trimming the roster on Friday, sending Andrew Knizner outright to Sacramento as they continue clearing space ahead of the deadline to activate all 16 players from the 60-day injured list.

According to the team announcement, Knizner cleared waivers and was removed from the 40-man roster. That drops the Giants to 34 players on the 40-man, but there is still a lot of housekeeping left. They need at least 10 more roster moves in the coming days, and those could come in a few different forms - activating players from the 60-day injured list, designating others for assignment, or even working out a trade or two.

Knizner was an easy candidate to move. He had already cleared waivers before, which gives him the right to refuse a minor league assignment and choose free agency instead. That outcome now looks likely, and it would let him shop for his next landing spot with catching depth always in demand.

San Francisco brought Knizner in late in the season after its catching depth thinned out. Daniel Susac went on the injured list in August with a knee injury, Zach Morgan was called up, and Knizner was added to a major league deal soon after.

The Giants know what they have in Knizner at this point. He has spent eight seasons in the majors, including the last two with San Francisco, and he hit .644 OPS with two home runs and four RBI in 80 plate appearances for the Giants.

Behind the plate, the numbers were rough: -5 Defensive Runs Saved and -6 Fielding Run Value in 181 innings. That’s a small sample, but it fit the broader pattern of him being a below-average defender over the course of his career.

There was also the money side of the equation. Knizner was arbitration-eligible and was projected to earn $1 million in 2027, according to MLB Trade Rumors.

For now, the Giants are set to lean on a young group behind the plate, with Daniel Susac and Drew Cavanaugh at the front of the line. They may still add a veteran catcher, but that move would likely come on a minor league deal.

Giants Face A Roster Crunch With Tough Deadline Moves Looming

The offseason roster shuffle is already moving fast, and the Giants are right in the middle of it as they work to clear spots ahead of a deadline that is forcing clubs to make some hard choices. Around the league, the Rays have been busy too, exercising their $20 million club option on pitcher Drew Rasmussen even though he is still expected to be traded, while also declining a mutual option on Cedric Mullins, finalizing Yandy Diazs contract and seeing Nick Martinez decline his mutual option.

There is still more decision-making to come, with teams needing to sort through qualifying offers for eligible free agents by the upcoming deadline. For San Francisco, the pressure is less about one move than the larger roster squeeze that comes with this stage of the calendar, when every addition, subtraction and contract call can ripple through the rest of the winter plans. Giants May Have Found A Cheap Infield Fix Worth Watching

The Giants still have a familiar roster puzzle to solve: finding a dependable utility presence who can move around the infield without creating a hole somewhere else. With the club looking ahead to 2027, Edmundo Sosa has emerged as a name worth monitoring because he brings the kind of defensive versatility that can help a bench and keep a lineup flexible over the long haul.

Sosas appeal is not just that he can handle multiple spots, but that his profile suggests a potentially affordable fit if San Francisco decides to shop in that lane. His offensive track record has been uneven, which is part of why the conversation centers on value rather than star power, but for a team that needs stability and options, he looks like the sort of low-cost target that can quietly make sense if the Giants decide to act.
