The Giants' defense is turning heads this spring with some impressive plays. In a recent spring training matchup against the Chicago Cubs at Scottsdale Stadium, they pulled off a remarkable triple play in the top of the first inning.
With Cubs runners on first and second and nobody out, Seiya Suzuki lofted a bloop single over San Francisco's second baseman Luis Arráez. Arráez quickly relayed the ball to pitcher Robbie Ray, serving as the cutoff man.
Ray then fired it to shortstop Willy Adames at second base. Adames tagged out Suzuki, who was ambitiously trying to stretch his hit into a double.
Meanwhile, Matt Shaw, starting from second, held up at third, creating a moment of confusion. Alex Bregman, initially on first, rounded second and found himself at third alongside Shaw.
Adames, after tagging Suzuki, sprinted to third and tagged out Bregman. In a crafty move, Adames handed the ball to third baseman Matt Chapman, who tagged Shaw as he stepped off the bag, sealing the triple play.
What looked like a promising situation for the Cubs, either scoring a run or loading the bases with no outs, quickly turned into an inning-ending triple play. Robbie Ray, who could have been facing a tough inning, was off the hook thanks to the Giants' sharp defensive execution.
