San Francisco Giants manager Tony Vitello is navigating Rafael Devers' return from injury with a focus on lineup flexibility, a crucial strategy as the season kicks off.
Before Friday's clash with the New York Yankees, Vitello shared that while having a consistent lineup is the dream, it's not yet a reality. The team is still in the evaluation phase, figuring out the best roster combinations.
Vitello explained, “Ideally, players would know their roles every day-both in terms of position and lineup spot. But that’s not happening anytime soon.”
The Giants are currently experimenting, aiming to strike the right balance and give players a chance to find their rhythm.
“For now, we’re seeking balance and letting the guys get their reps in,” he said. “Baseball is ever-evolving, and we’re adapting as we go.”
Vitello highlighted the versatility at the top of the lineup, which allows for a variety of combinations.
“Our first six guys can be shuffled into 72 different combinations,” he noted. “They’re interchangeable.”
On defense, choices are influenced by both performance and player development. At first base, Casey Schmitt currently has the edge, but Jerar Encarnación remains a strong contender.
“Casey is slightly ahead defensively,” Vitello said. “But Jerar’s size and effort make him a valuable option.”
Vitello also addressed Devers' readiness to play, emphasizing communication with the medical team for long-term success.
“If it were a playoff game, Devers could play,” Vitello mentioned. “But we’re thinking about the full 162-game stretch.”
Devers continues to work on his defense, focusing on maintaining his health for the long haul.
On the pitching front, Vitello suggested a flexible approach due to the early season schedule.
“We might mix things up with our first five pitchers,” he said. “We’ll assess after the first few games.”
Reflecting on the mental demands of the season, Vitello compared it to his early baseball days.
“You always want another shot,” he reflected. “The great thing is, there’s always a chance to win a series.”
