The SF Giants shuffled their roster ahead of Friday’s series opener against the Los Angeles Dodgers, bringing back one bat and one arm while two players headed to the injured list.
Victor Bericoto was activated from the injured list, and Duncan Davitt was recalled from Triple-A, according to the team’s transaction log. To clear room, Logan Webb and Nate Furman were both placed on the injured list.
Webb is dealing with a finger blister, while Furman has an oblique strain. The Giants had already been weighing whether to shut Webb down for the past week, and this injury move ends his season.
It’s his second trip to the injured list this year. For a pitcher who had been one of the more durable arms in baseball over the last few seasons, that’s a notable turn, even if injuries are simply part of the deal.
Webb finished the year with a 4.31 ERA, 3.45 FIP, 1.17 WHIP, 7.5 K/9, and a 3.27 SO/W rate across 27 starts.
Furman’s season was less productive at the plate. He posted a .368 OPS in 39 plate appearances, though the Giants saw enough in his work to note that he showed a good approach despite the lack of offense.
Bericoto’s return gives the Giants a chance to get a right-handed bat some more at-bats before the season wraps up. He had been out since the end of August with a knee bruise.
In 88 plate appearances this season, he has a .664 OPS with four home runs and 12 RBI. The power has been there, but the plate discipline still needs work - he has drawn just one walk.
With the Giants’ outfield leaning heavily left-handed, a right-handed option like Bericoto could fit a need. The current group, including Jung Hoo Lee and Drew Gilbert, is expected to require platoon handling, which opens the door for at-bats down the line for anyone who can handle that side of the matchup.
Davitt is a newer name in the organization after being claimed off waivers from the Atlanta Braves. His results in the upper minors haven’t been strong, but he does bring a decent fastball and an unusual arm slot. He also has a cool offseason job.
