Giants Reveal Opening Day Roster With One Notable Omission

Giants reveal a dynamic Opening Day roster, blending youthful promise and strategic veteran adjustments, to navigate the upcoming season challenges.

Spring has finally arrived, and with it, the excitement of a new baseball season. The San Francisco Giants are ready to take the field, and their Opening Day roster is set, promising a blend of anticipation and potential challenges.

The roster reveal brings few surprises based on recent developments, but it’s a different story compared to the start of Spring Training. The biggest headline?

Outfielder Luis Matos has been designated for assignment. The Giants have been cautious about their ability to sneak him through waivers, and while it’s a long shot, they’ve played their hand.

Jared Oliva, a speedy 30-year-old non-roster invitee, has earned a spot on the Opening Day roster. With just 26 MLB games under his belt, and none since 2021, Oliva’s ability to steal bases off the bench has impressed the Giants, who are confident in their everyday lineup to handle the hitting duties.

Catching duties see Daniel Susac stepping in as the backup, following the release of veteran Eric Haase. This move solidifies Jesús Rodríguez as the next option behind the plate if needed.

In the bullpen, the Giants opted for talent over tenure, choosing Keaton Winn and Caleb Kilian over veteran Michael Fulmer, who heads to AAA Sacramento. To accommodate Kilian, Reiver Sanmartín moves to the 60-Day Injured List.

As expected, relievers Joel Peguero and Sam Hentges start the season on the 15-Day IL, finalizing the bullpen setup.

Tonight, the Giants face off against the New York Yankees at 5:05 p.m. PT, with a roster that boasts a balanced bullpen and a bench lacking a left-handed bat. Here’s the team ready to take the field:

  • Willy Adames
