The San Francisco Giants are setting the stage for an exciting season in the minors, with top prospects Josuar Gonzalez and Luis Hernández ready to make their mark. According to Kyle Haines, the team's senior director of player development, both players will kick off their 2026 campaigns in the Arizona Complex League (ACL).
This decision sheds light on the Giants' strategy for nurturing their young talent, as reported by Jesús Cano of Baseball America. Cano, who has been closely following the Giants' prospects in Arizona, noted that Hernández's rapid progression has allowed him to bypass the Dominican Summer League-a rarity for players in their signing year. This move signals the Giants' confidence in Hernández's development.
Initially, there was speculation that Hernández might leap directly to the California League, but the Giants opted for a more measured approach, consistent with their conservative handling of prospects last year. This decision allows both Hernández and Gonzalez to develop their skills side by side, much to the anticipation of Giants fans who hope to see this dynamic duo on the field together for years to come.
The Giants have made significant investments in these international prospects, with Hernández securing a $5 million signing bonus from Venezuela and Gonzalez receiving just under $3 million from the Dominican Republic in 2025. Gonzalez impressed last summer in the Dominican Summer League, boasting a .288/.404/.455 slash line with four homers, 24 RBIs, and 52 runs across 228 plate appearances. His 33 steals in 38 attempts further highlight his potential as a switch-hitting infielder.
While both Gonzalez and Hernández are projected as long-term shortstops, they might need to share the position this summer. With the ACL season spanning only about 60 games, there's flexibility for one to gain experience at second base without hindering their development. Hernández, in particular, looked comfortable at shortstop during the Spring Breakout game, showcasing his readiness for the role.
As the season unfolds, the Giants will be keeping a close eye on their progress. If either player excels, a promotion to the San Jose Giants could be on the horizon before the season's end. Giants fans have plenty to be excited about as these young talents embark on their journey through the minors.
