Giants Hit With Bizarre Opening Day Do-Over

Despite Wednesday's defeat and quirky first game, the SF Giants aim for redemption against the Yankees with a puzzling "Opening Day" reset.

The San Francisco Giants are gearing up for what they’re calling Opening Day, Part Two, as they face off against the New York Yankees. While they already clashed with the Yankees on Wednesday for Opening Night, the Giants are treating today’s home day game as their official Opening Day.

Even Giants manager Tony Vitello seemed amused by the concept, saying, "The cool thing is we get a re-do, today is being called Opening Day again. I'll let our people explain that."

Wednesday’s matchup was a tough pill to swallow for the Giants, with the Yankees cruising to a 7-0 victory. Logan Webb struggled on the mound, and the Giants’ offense was virtually silent.

The game itself felt offbeat, broadcast on Netflix with an unusual start time and featuring trolley cars and taxis on the field. It didn’t quite capture the traditional Giants home opener vibe.

Today’s game offers a clean slate for San Francisco. They’re sticking with the same lineup from Wednesday, hoping to finally put some runs on the board in the 2026 season.

They’ll be facing Yankees right-hander Cam Schlitter, who had a strong 2025 season. At least he’s not a lefty like Max Fried, against whom the Giants have historically struggled.

Robbie Ray will be on the mound for the Giants. An All-Star last season, Ray will look to find his first-half form after a less impressive second half last year.

The Yankees are tweaking their lineup a bit, with Paul Goldschmidt, a notorious Giants nemesis, leading off. Goldschmidt has a history of delivering against the Giants, so he’s definitely a player to watch.

Whether you call it Opening Day or not, the Giants are looking to hit the reset button and kick off their home schedule with a win. Here’s hoping this fresh start ignites some early-season momentum.
