The Tampa Bay Rays head into the All-Star break with the best record in the American League, but that hasn’t changed the basic assignment for the front office: find ways to make a good team better before October.
One area that still stands out is the lineup. Tampa Bay has plenty of talent, but the depth has been questioned, and there are a couple of spots where the offense simply hasn’t done enough. Two of those holes sit right in the middle of the infield, which is why the trade deadline chatter is already circling back to possible upgrades.
Bob Nightengale of USA Today recently pointed to San Francisco Giants slugger Luis Arraez as a backup plan for the Rays. Ketel Marte of the Arizona Diamondbacks may be the preferred name, but Arraez could be the more realistic one. Arizona is in a much stronger position than San Francisco, and the Giants have essentially made everyone available.
Arraez would give Tampa Bay exactly what it lacks in some spots: one of the game’s best contact hitters. He has hit .330/.369/.460 with four home runs and 35 RBI this season, numbers that earned him an All-Star nod in the National League.
For a Rays lineup that already includes Yandy Diaz, Junior Caminero, and Jonathan Aranda, Arraez would fit as a strong table setter for the run-producers behind him. And because he is on a one-year deal, the price tag to land him should not be overwhelming.
He may not be the top target, but he checks a lot of boxes for a team looking to sharpen its roster without overreaching.
