The SF Giants are expected to be active before the MLB trade deadline, and the Seattle Mariners look like the cleanest match. One deal in particular stands out: a straight-up swap of Heliot Ramos for Emerson Hancock.
Seattle’s need is obvious. The Mariners are looking for offense, and Ramos gives them exactly that.
Even with the bumps he’s dealt with this season and a slight dip in his numbers compared to past years, he still brings real power to the lineup. He hit more than 20 homers in both 2024 and 2025, and he’s not just a short-term fix.
That matters, especially with the uncertainty that could hang over next season because of a looming lockout.
San Francisco, meanwhile, needs help in the rotation, and Hancock fits that ask cleanly. He’s put together a 3.26 ERA in 20 starts this season, striking out 102 while walking only 27 across 110 innings.
For a Giants staff that could use more stability, that’s the kind of profile that makes sense. If Hancock were penciled in as the No. 3 or No. 4 starter next year, the Giants would have reason to feel good about the shape of the rotation.
That’s especially true if Logan Webb and Landen Roupp are still in the fold. Add Hancock to that mix, then maybe bring in one legitimate free agent - Kevin Gausman reunion anyone? - and let a young arm like Carson Whisenhunt or Blade Tidwell handle the No. 5 spot, and the group starts to look respectable.
The Giants’ reluctance to spend heavily on pitching only makes the case stronger. Giving up a proven hitter and former All-Star would hurt, but Hancock is already a big-league starter who has shown he can get outs at this level. That’s a safer bet than hoping a prospect develops on schedule.
For that reason, this is the kind of move Buster Posey and the front office should be eager to make. If they can land Hancock for Ramos, the Giants would improve right away and set themselves up better for what comes next.
