The Giants have unveiled their 2026 MLB Opening Day roster, and one name that stands out is veteran outfielder Jared Oliva. Oliva, a seasoned pro, has snagged the final bench spot in a formidable outfield lineup featuring Heliot Ramos, Harrison Bader, and Jung Hoo Lee.
Giants broadcaster Duane Kuiper shared his insights on Oliva's impressive spring training performance, likening him to Andres Torres from 2010. "Torres came in with slim chances but ended up playing a pivotal role in the Giants' championship win," Kuiper remarked on KNBR’s “Murph & Markus” show. Oliva finds himself in a similar position, suddenly becoming a key player in the mix.
The decision to include Oliva wasn't easy, but his potential impact is undeniable. In those tight extra-inning situations, having a player like Oliva who can be placed as a runner at second base is a strategic advantage.
During spring training, Oliva showcased his skills with a .375/.444/.550 slash line, racking up 14 stolen bases, nine RBIs, and a home run over 20 games. Kuiper admitted, "We initially didn't know much about Oliva, even calling him 'Oliver' at first. But his unique abilities quickly caught our attention."
Kuiper pondered, "When was the last time a relatively unknown player changed the game like this in spring training? He's 30, and you wonder why he hasn't spent more time in the majors."
Drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the seventh round of the 2017 MLB Draft from the University of Arizona, Oliva has journeyed through the minors and winter leagues. His previous MLB stints with the Pirates in 2020 and 2021 were brief, with a batting line of .179/.220/.214 over 59 plate appearances.
Now, as a member of the Giants, Oliva has the chance to finally make his mark in the big leagues, bringing his dynamic style and defensive prowess to the forefront.
