Brewers Add Young Outfielder In Surprise Giants Deal

Brewers bolster outfield depth with the acquisition of promising Luis Matos, eyeing continued success after a strong season start.

The Milwaukee Brewers are off to a flying start this season, boasting a perfect 3-0 record after sweeping the Chicago White Sox. With momentum on their side, they now prepare to face the Tampa Bay Rays, who stumbled out of the gate with a 1-2 start against the St.

Louis Cardinals. But before the Brewers take the field again, they’ve made a strategic move to bolster their roster.

In a recent trade announcement, the Brewers have acquired 24-year-old outfielder Luis Matos from the San Francisco Giants, sending cash considerations the other way. This move adds some valuable depth to their outfield, which is especially timely given the injury to Jackson Chourio.

Matos, a right-handed hitter, brings a career .650 OPS to Milwaukee. Over 558 Major League at-bats, he's posted a .231 batting average, hit 15 home runs, and driven in 61 RBIs, alongside seven stolen bases. Last season, Matos showed flashes of potential with a .221 average and a .690 OPS across 57 games, contributing nine doubles, one triple, and eight home runs for the Giants.

His performance in spring training was promising, as he notched a .767 OPS and a .260 batting average over 23 games. While Matos might not be a blockbuster acquisition, his addition provides the Brewers with a potentially intriguing option in the outfield. At just 24, there’s still room for growth, making this a savvy move for Milwaukee as they look to maintain their early-season success.
