Two 49ers Draft Picks Are Already Changing This Defense

The unexpected contributions of Gracen Halton and Jaden Dugger are proving pivotal for the undefeated 49ers, showcasing the hidden gems found in the later rounds of the NFL draft.

The San Francisco 49ers are getting real early return on two Day 3 picks, and Sports Illustrated’s Justin Melo has already put both rookies on his list of steals from the 2026 NFL draft.

Defensive tackle Gracen Halton and linebacker Jaden Dugger have each carved out meaningful roles on a defense that has helped push San Francisco to a 6-0 start. That kind of impact this quickly is exactly why both players are drawing attention.

Halton, taken in the fourth round at No. 107 overall out of Oklahoma, has delivered the kind of disruptive snaps that jump out on film and show up in the box score. Through six games, he has 15 tackles, two sacks, and a forced fumble that he recovered for a touchdown.

He’s become part of the 49ers’ defensive line rotation, and Melo described him this way: "San Francisco 49ers rookie defensive tackle Gracen Halton is playing a high-level rotational role for a 6-0 team. Halton is a quick-footed interior defender with explosiveness.

He's consistently getting off blocks and making plays."

Dugger has brought similar value in a different way. The fifth-round pick at No. 154 overall out of Louisiana has stacked up 28 tackles, one sack and one tackle for loss while logging 211 defensive snaps. He’s earned time alongside Fred Warner and Dre Greenlaw, giving the 49ers another presence in the middle of the defense.

That middle has been awfully sturdy so far. San Francisco has allowed just 110 points through six games, which ranks fourth-fewest in the NFL, and opponents have managed only 4.7 yards per play.

For a team getting that level of defensive production, contributions from two rookies picked outside the first three rounds stand out fast. Halton and Dugger have done more than fill space - they’ve given the 49ers real snaps, real stops and real reasons to believe they found value in the draft.

Bijan Robinsons McCaffrey Insight Says A Lot Before Falcons-49ers

Bijan Robinson has become the kind of all-purpose threat Atlanta can build around, and the upcoming trip to face the 49ers puts him on a stage he knows well from a different kind of offseason setting. The Falcons back is a central piece of their offense as both a runner and receiver, and the matchup carries extra weight because San Franciscos attack is built around Christian McCaffrey, one of the sports standard-bearers at the position.

Robinsons view of McCaffrey only adds to the intrigue. The two spent time around each other in California over the summer, and Robinson has come away with a deeper appreciation for the details behind McCaffreys success, from the way he prepares to the way he approaches recovery and competition. It is the sort of behind-the-scenes overlap that makes this more than just another early-season test for Atlanta, especially with the 49ers still unbeaten. [Read more 🡒]

49ers Suddenly Face A Debate Their 6-0 Start Created

The 49ers unbeaten start has given them an unusual kind of problem for October: how to protect a team that has already separated itself from the NFC West pack while still trying to keep the roster intact. San Francisco is 6-0 despite the wear and tear that has already hit key pieces, and the cushion it has built over division rivals, including Seattle, has changed the conversation around how aggressively the club should push through the coming weeks.

Thats where the latest outside chatter comes in. NFL analyst Dan Orlovsky floated the idea that the 49ers might even consider an NBA-style load-management approach, a suggestion that would have sounded far-fetched in September but feels more relevant now given the length of the injury list. With Nick Bosa and Deebo Samuel among the players already dealing with injuries, the question is no longer just how good San Francisco is, but how long it can keep this version of itself on the field. 49ers Ownership Drama Arrives At The Worst Possible Time

The 49ers have spent the early part of the season trying to keep the focus on football, and the results have given them plenty of cover. While San Francisco sits at 6-0, Jed Yorks off-field situation has been lingering in the background after his arrest in an undercover prostitution sting in August led to a six-game suspension from team duties.

Now that suspension has ended, York is eligible to resume his role with the organization, and he reportedly has already been back around league business at an NFL owners meeting earlier this week. For a team enjoying its best stretch of the season, it is hardly the distraction anyone wanted to revisit, especially with the organization still trying to keep the attention where it belongs.
