Trent Williams Just Gave 49ers Fans A Reason To Believe In Gracen Halton

Could rookie sensation Gracen Halton be the next big thing in the 49ers' defense, drawing comparisons to former standout D.J. Jones?

The 49ers may have spent heavily on their defensive front a year ago, but they still found room to keep adding in the 2026 NFL Draft. With the No. 107 pick in the fourth round, San Francisco took Oklahoma defensive tackle Gracen Halton, a 22-year-old who arrived in the league with a reputation for popping off the snap and making life miserable in the backfield.

Halton’s college résumé at Oklahoma was built over 47 games and four seasons, and the numbers back up the production: 84 tackles, 17.5 tackles for loss, 8.5 sacks, three forced fumbles, two passes defensed and two fumble recoveries. The All-SEC defender’s standout trait was the same one that showed up at the NFL Scouting Combine, where his 1.70-second 10-yard split helped underline just how quickly he gets moving.

That burst showed up right away in his preseason debut against the Tennessee Titans. Halton got pressure on quarterback Cam Ward on one snap, though the play was wiped out by a penalty, then immediately followed it by fighting through a block to drop Tyjae Spears for a loss. By the end of the game, Pro Football Focus had him as San Francisco’s top run defender, giving him a 75.0 run-defense grade and crediting him with four defensive stops, the most of any defender on the field.

After practice, Trent Williams had a pretty direct comparison for the rookie. The future Hall of Fame tackle, who knows a thing or two about dominant trench play, pointed to a former 49ers interior force in D.J. Jones.

"Boomer Sooner, Gracen Halton, you know it. G-Baby, man," Williams said during media availability.

"Obviously, Oklahoma guy, so I'm always gonna be a little biased, but I think the world kinda saw what he has to offer. Very explosive.

Short area quickness. Really powerful.

He puts you in the mind of D.J. Jones a little bit, what he had when he was here.

He definitely impressed."

Jones made his name in San Francisco with the kind of disruptive work that never always shows up in the flashiest way, but matters plenty on Sundays. His career totals included 287 tackles, 36 for loss, 15.0 sacks, 26 quarterback hits, six forced fumbles, three recoveries and 13 passes defensed.

If Halton can carve out anything close to that kind of impact, the 49ers will have another useful Day 3 addition on a defensive line that already had plenty of attention.

49ers Camp Suddenly Has A Mac Jones Question Fans Didn't Expect

Kurtis Rourke turned heads in his 49ers debut, and it did more than just add another name to the quarterback mix. Around a camp that already has Brock Purdy working through joint practices with the Chargers and rookie running back Kaelon Black flashing, Rourkes first showing gave the roster a little more intrigue than the team probably expected this early in August.

It also has quietly changed the conversation around Mac Jones, whose contract situation is now part of the backdrop as the preseason unfolds. The 49ers are still juggling routine camp decisions, including Christian McCaffrey being held out of some work as a precaution and bringing back defensive tackle Evan Anderson for depth, but the most interesting question may be whether the quarterback picture is stable enough to last beyond the summer. 49ers Veteran Suddenly Has A Real Week 1 Opening

Sam Okuayinonu has spent the early part of his 49ers career looking like a depth piece with room to grow, but this season could finally give him a clearer path. Entering his third year in San Francisco, he is expected to see more playing time, and the roster picture around him has shifted just enough to make that feel real heading into the opener.

The opening may have arrived sooner than the 49ers planned. With the team still managing injuries along the edge, Okuayinonu could be in line to start or at least handle a meaningful workload right away, giving him a chance to turn a longer look into something more permanent if the early-season rotation stays thin. 49ers Wide Receiver Battle Just Claimed An Unexpected Draft Pick

The 49ers wide receiver competition took an early turn before their first preseason game, with Junior Bergen waived after a camp that had highlighted his return ability. Bergen had been viewed as a long shot to crack San Franciscos roster, and the teams depth at receiver made every fringe spot difficult to hold onto as roster decisions started to come due.

Bergen did not stay on the wire long. The Jets claimed him and made room by moving on from an undrafted free agent, a quick reminder that even players on the edge of the 49ers roster can still draw interest elsewhere. For San Francisco, it is another small but notable cut in a crowded position battle that could keep shifting as preseason unfolds. [Read more 🡒]
