Steelers Linked To 49ers 120 Million Cut Candidate

As the offseason heats up, the Steelers, Commanders, and Bills are all eyeing 49ers' cut candidate Brandon Aiyuk to bolster their receiving corps.

In the ever-evolving NFL landscape, three teams still on the hunt for wide receiver talent this offseason are the Pittsburgh Steelers, Washington Commanders, and Buffalo Bills.

The Steelers made headlines by acquiring Michael Pittman Jr., creating a formidable duo with DK Metcalf. Yet, the depth behind these stars remains a concern.

Meanwhile, the Bills shook things up with the addition of DJ Moore from the Chicago Bears. However, beyond Moore and Khalil Shakir, their options thin out, with Joshua Palmer and Keon Coleman not living up to expectations.

Washington, on the other hand, has yet to secure a solid No. 2 receiver to complement Terry McLaurin. Their current roster moves haven’t quite sparked excitement among fans.

Enter Brandon Aiyuk, a potential game-changer for any of these squads. Recently labeled a cut candidate, Aiyuk's journey with the San Francisco 49ers seems to be nearing its end. His stint with the Niners was marred by a significant knee injury in 2024 and disagreements over his recovery plan, leading to the voiding of his 2026 guarantees.

Despite expectations that the 49ers would release Aiyuk at the start of the league year, they’re likely exploring trade possibilities to get some return on their investment. A torn ACL after signing a hefty four-year, $120 million contract sidelined him last season, casting doubts on his future contributions.

John Lynch, the 49ers' general manager, acknowledged the unfortunate turn of events, stating, "It's safe to say that he's played his last snap with the Niners." The league knows Aiyuk's time in San Francisco is over, which might deter potential trade partners.

Given his recent inactivity, Aiyuk is likely to be seen as a supplementary piece rather than a cornerstone. This makes him a better fit as a No. 3 receiver for the Steelers or Bills, rather than a leading option for Washington. Yet, the Commanders remain intrigued, partly due to Aiyuk's connection with former college teammate Jayden Daniels.

CBS Sports' Jonathan Jones reports that if Aiyuk ends up with the Commanders, it would likely be on a one-year deal. The Steelers, too, have shown interest in the past, and rumors of a trade were afloat before his contract extension with the Niners.

While Aiyuk might not immediately resolve Washington's need for a solid No. 2 receiver, the Commanders appear to be the frontrunners for his services in 2026. Keep an eye on this situation as it unfolds, as Aiyuk could be the missing piece that adds depth and intrigue to any of these teams' receiving corps.
