Steelers Legend and 49ers Executive Linked by Super Bowl Glory Pass Away

The NFL community mourns the loss of two iconic figures, Neal Dahlen and Mike Wagner, whose combined legacy is anchored by an astounding 11 Super Bowl victories.

In a somber moment for the NFL community, we remember the impactful legacies of Neal Dahlen and Mike Wagner, both of whom passed away on Wednesday. Dahlen, a revered executive, was instrumental in crafting championship-winning teams for both the San Francisco 49ers and the Denver Broncos.

His strategic acumen helped the 49ers secure five Super Bowl titles between 1981 and 1994, and he was a key figure in the Broncos’ consecutive Super Bowl victories in 1998 and 1999. At the age of 85, Dahlen leaves behind a legacy of excellence and a collection of seven Super Bowl rings, tying him with Tom Brady and only trailing Bill Belichick in the all-time standings.

Mike Wagner, a cornerstone of the Pittsburgh Steelers’ legendary “Steel Curtain” defense, spent his entire decade-long career with the team. As an All-Pro safety, Wagner was pivotal in the Steelers’ four Super Bowl triumphs in the 1970s under the leadership of head coach Chuck Noll.

Known for his knack for big plays, Wagner snagged crucial interceptions in Super Bowls IX and X, solidifying his place in Steelers lore. Despite being an 11th-round pick out of Western Michigan in 1971, Wagner exceeded expectations and became an integral part of a team brimming with talent.

Steelers President Art Rooney II shared heartfelt condolences, acknowledging Wagner’s courageous battle with pancreatic cancer since 2020. As we reflect on their contributions, both Dahlen and Wagner are remembered not just for their achievements on the field, but for the indelible marks they left on the game and the countless lives they touched along the way.

Our thoughts are with their families and friends during this difficult time, as we honor the enduring legacies of two remarkable figures in NFL history.
