Sam Darnold’s return to the Seahawks looks closer by the day, and Seattle has every reason to take its time.
After opening the season with a 13-10 win over the reigning AFC champion Patriots and following that up with a 31-7 rout of the Cardinals, the defending Super Bowl champions have barely missed a beat without their starting quarterback. Darnold went down early in the Patriots game with a glute injury and still has not practiced in Seattle, much less played again. That appears poised to change soon.
NFL insider Ian Rapoport reported that Darnold is expected back on the practice field this week, potentially as early as Wednesday.
"It sounds like Sam Darnold has a chance to return this week," Rapoport said. "They want to be cautious with him.
The fact that he's going to be out there practicing this week is a very good sign. This was the word we got on Sunday, that he's healing faster than anybody would have imagined, and this is all really good ...
Maybe another week of Drew Lock, but sooner rather than later for Darnold."
While Darnold has been sidelined, Drew Lock has handled the job with confidence. Through two games, he has completed 72.9% of his passes for 422 yards and four touchdowns without throwing an interception. His 127.3 passer rating leads the NFL, ahead of Jaxson Dart at 125.9, Josh Allen at 125.8 and Brock Purdy at 125.6.
A big part of that production has gone through Jaxon Smith-Njigba, who leads the league with 277 receiving yards and four touchdowns. Even so, Lock’s numbers speak for themselves. He’s still the backup, but he has given Seattle a steady answer while the team waits for its starter to get right.
That’s where the Seahawks’ long view comes in. Darnold was their guy last season, when he threw for 4,048 yards and 25 touchdowns against 14 interceptions, completed 67.7% of his passes, earned his second straight Pro Bowl nod and helped Seattle win a Super Bowl. The team is not about to change course now, especially with Lock playing so well that there’s no reason to force the issue.
Seattle’s next two games also give the club some breathing room. The Seahawks face the Commanders next, and Washington is 0-2 and just lost Jayden Daniels, before a Week 4 home matchup with the struggling Chargers. Both are games Seattle will be heavily favored to win, with or without Darnold.

49ers Suddenly Linked To A High-Upside WR Gamble
Marvin Harrison Jr.s NFL start has not matched the kind of lofty expectations that followed him into the league, and the early part of the 2026 season has only added to the frustration around his development in Arizona. For a player who arrived with major pedigree, the conversation has shifted from instant stardom to whether a change of scenery might be the best way to reset the trajectory.
For the 49ers, the fit is easy to understand. Their wide receiver room is getting older, and San Francisco has reasons to keep looking for younger, high-upside talent as it tries to stay ahead of the curve. Harrisons struggles make him a gamble, but they also make him the kind of name that naturally pops up when a contender starts weighing whether it can buy low on a former premium prospect. Brock Purdy Just Reignited A 49ers Debate Fans Know Too Well
Brock Purdys latest stretch has only strengthened the way the 49ers offense is being viewed, with back-to-back victories and a connection with George Kittle that PFF tracking says has become the most efficient quarterback-tight end duo in NFL history. For a team that has spent years cycling through debates about who best fits the job under center, Purdys steady play has given San Francisco a clear answer on the field, especially in the way he has consistently found Kittle and kept the offense moving.
Claire Kittles social media note of gratitude for Purdy added a new layer to the discussion, because some fans immediately read it as a swipe at former 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo. The post itself is just part of the noise that follows any quarterback conversation in San Francisco, but it also says plenty about where the team stands now: Purdy has earned a level of trust that Garoppolo never quite matched, and the reaction around that reality shows the old debate is still very much alive. 49ers Have More Riding On Sunday Than Just A 3-0 Start
A 3-0 start is about more than a clean early record, and for the 49ers it would mean joining a small but meaningful tier of teams that have a much better track record of turning September momentum into January football. Over the past decade, the numbers have favored clubs that leave the first three weeks unbeaten, with those teams far more likely to reach the playoffs and advance deeper than the ones sitting at 2-1 or 1-2.
San Francisco is in position to stake its claim to that group, and the timing matters because the race for playoff seeding often starts before most teams are ready to admit it. The Seahawks are also in the mix for the same kind of early statement, but for the 49ers the broader point is simple: Sunday is about more than staying perfect, it is about improving the path ahead in a conference where every small edge can matter later on.
