Roger Craig’s Hall of Fame wait is over, and the response from the 49ers’ old guard says plenty about the kind of player he was.
The long-delayed call to Canton landed the way it should have inside San Francisco circles: with admiration, relief and a clear sense that Craig had been waiting far too long. A central piece of Bill Walsh’s West Coast Offense, he helped drive the 49ers’ 1980s run to three Super Bowl titles in eight seasons before later finishing his career with short stops with the Los Angeles Raiders and Minnesota Vikings.
Craig wasn’t just a product of that era. He helped define it.
As both a runner and a receiver, he became the first player in NFL history to pile up 1,000 rushing yards and 1,000 receiving yards in the same season. Since then, only Marshall Faulk and current 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey have matched that mark.
McCaffrey did it with the Carolina Panthers and nearly repeated it with San Francisco last season.
That’s part of why the timing of Craig’s enshrinement felt overdue, especially when measured against how many of his teammates from that dynasty had already been honored.
Two of those teammates, Steve Young and Ronnie Lott, spoke glowingly about Craig after the news became official.
"Roger was a thermostat player. His talent and spirit raised us all up when we lagged.
Roger was high knees and high spirits. The high knees are a metaphor for how he lived his life," shared Young with 49ers Webzone's Marc Adams.
Lott offered a similarly vivid tribute, saying, "Knowing him and being around him and being a person who appreciates the game, even when I see him now, you know that everything that he put into the game, he meant every moment. I have this saying, 'Exhaust life.' Roger Craig exhausted life."
He continued, "He exhausted every moment that he played on the football field. And he was intentional about doing that in a way that made all of us better for so many reasons.
"And the reason I say, for so many reasons, is the guy who was sitting in the corner who is not necessarily ready to go. And here's Roger, right there, pumping him up, getting him ready to go."
Craig’s place in 49ers history was already secure. Now, with Canton added to the picture, his legacy stretches beyond the museum and into the Hall of Fame where it always seemed destined to land.

Trent Williams is dealing with an off-field headache as the 49ers head into the season, with OpenRoad Auto Group filing a lawsuit over an alleged unpaid lease on a 2018 Porsche 911. Dominick Puni has quietly become one of the more interesting names in 49ers camp, and not just because he is back healthy after an injury-disrupted second season. The right guard is entering his third NFL year with 34 career starts already on his resume, and after opening as a rookie starter, he has shown enough early promise to keep drawing attention from around the building.
What makes the situation worth watching is how quickly a lineman can go from useful starter to priority decision. If Puni keeps playing at a high level, the 49ers could be looking at a season that puts him in the conversation for major individual honors and, eventually, a contract that reflects that kind of rise.
