Robert Saleh’s Coaching Stock Is Soaring - And Multiple NFL Teams Are Taking Notice
Robert Saleh is back in his element-and back in the spotlight. Since returning to San Francisco to resume his role as the 49ers’ defensive coordinator, Saleh has helped orchestrate one of the league’s most impressive defensive turnarounds.
Now, with the Niners sitting at 9-4 heading into their bye week, Saleh’s name is once again circulating in head coaching conversations. And this time, the interest is real.
The 49ers’ defense has been a force, ranking among the league’s best in several key categories, including third in defensive fumble recoveries with nine. That kind of production doesn’t go unnoticed, especially when it’s paired with Saleh’s trademark energy on the sideline and his ability to connect with players. Teams looking for leadership, toughness, and a defensive identity are watching closely.
A Return to New York?
One team that could be eyeing a reunion is the New York Giants. After parting ways with Brian Daboll, the Giants are in the market for a new head coach-and Saleh’s name is firmly on the radar.
While his previous stint in New York came across town with the Jets and ultimately ended in disappointment, Saleh still speaks fondly of the city and its fans. “I've got unbelievable memories of New York,” he said.
“It didn't work out the way I wanted, but it was still an unbelievable experience... Love New York.
Love the fanbase. Love all of the chaos.”
That affection for the Big Apple, combined with a much more stable roster situation, could make the Giants a compelling landing spot. New York has some intriguing young pieces in place, including quarterback Jaxson Dart, rookie running back Cam Skattebo, wide receiver Malik Nabers, and defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence. With that foundation, the Giants job could be one of the most attractive openings in the 2026 cycle.
Saleh, though, isn’t ready to talk about the future just yet. “I'm not thinking about it,” he said.
“I know you probably want an answer, but we got four weeks here. We’re in the middle of a playoff push.”
Fair enough. But the buzz around him isn’t going away anytime soon.
Titans, Raiders Also in the Mix
The Giants aren’t the only ones interested. The Tennessee Titans are also reportedly high on Saleh as they look to chart a new course. They’ve got a young quarterback in Cam Ward entering his second year in 2026, and the organization appears to be prioritizing toughness and defensive identity in their coaching search.
Saleh checks both boxes.
His prior head coaching experience, combined with a no-nonsense demeanor and strong connections on the offensive side of the ball, make him a logical fit for a franchise looking to reset. There’s also a clear contrast in style from previous leadership, which could be exactly what the Titans need.
Meanwhile, out in Las Vegas, the Raiders are in the midst of yet another chaotic season. Pete Carroll’s tenure has been rocky, and the offense-once led by Chip Kelly-has bottomed out. Kelly was let go after his unit posted league-worst numbers, including just 905 rushing yards despite having a talent like Ashton Jeanty in the backfield.
The Raiders may be a mess, but they’re still a team with pieces to build around. Edge rusher Maxx Crosby remains a cornerstone, and any incoming coach could have input on the quarterback position and offensive coordinator hire. For someone like Saleh, who values culture and stability, the opportunity to reshape a franchise from the ground up could be enticing-especially if the front office is willing to give him time and resources.
What’s Next?
Saleh’s focus, for now, is locked in on the 49ers’ playoff run. And understandably so. But as the regular season winds down and coaching vacancies start to open up, his phone is going to ring-probably more than once.
Whether it’s a return to New York, a fresh start in Tennessee, or a bold rebuild in Las Vegas, Robert Saleh is going to have options. And after the work he’s done in San Francisco this season, he’s earned every bit of that interest.
