The Giants made a stunner less than a week before their season opener against the Cowboys, cutting veteran wide receiver Darius Slayton.
Slayton, 29, had been the longest-tenured player on the roster and was set to earn $13 million this season. The former fifth-round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft spent his entire Giants run producing 296 catches on 522 targets for 4,435 yards and 22 touchdowns.
He never turned into a true star in New York, but he carved out a steady role and outplayed his draft slot. Slayton posted four seasons with at least 700 receiving yards and averaged 15 yards per catch during his time with the Giants.
His final year was his quietest. In 14 games, he hauled in 37 of 63 targets for 538 yards and one touchdown. Over the final six games of the 2025 season, he topped 50 receiving yards only once.
Even with that dip, Slayton figures to draw interest quickly. He was a former team captain and has built a reputation as a dependable complementary receiver who knows how to do his job without demanding the spotlight.
Several teams stand out as possible fits.
The Colts jump out first. They still have Alec Pierce, but after trading Michael Pittman to the Steelers in the offseason, the room took a hit.
Indianapolis also recently added Keenan Allen, who was arrested late last month for suspected DUI. At the very least, Slayton would give them another body and some much-needed depth at receiver.
The Jets are another obvious name. They could use help behind Garrett Wilson, and Slayton would also ease some of the burden on Omar Cooper Jr., the 30th overall pick in April’s draft. His experience and veteran presence could help Cooper adjust to the NFL.
New Orleans has a need, too. Rookie first-rounder Jordyn Tyson was placed on injured reserve after a right hamstring injury suffered during a joint practice with the Jacksonville Jaguars, and he’s expected to miss about two months.
That leaves rookie fourth-round pick Bryce Lance slated to start with Chris Olave and Devaughn Vele. Slayton might not jump Lance right away, but he could take some pressure off him and give second-year quarterback Tyler Shough another option.
San Francisco also makes the list. The 49ers signed Buccaneers legend Mike Evans and re-signed Deebo Samuel after losing Jauan Jennings to the Vikings in free agency, while Brandon Aiyuk’s situation remains unresolved and he appears to have played his final down with the team, if not in the NFL.
Ricky Pearsall’s season-ending knee injury only adds to the need. Slayton would bring depth and fit alongside the rest of the skill talent.
New England fits for multiple reasons. Mike Vrabel recently said the team isn’t very deep, and the Patriots also lost Kayshon Boutte in a trade to the Houston Texans.
Slayton could help offset that departure while giving Drake Maye another proven target. The source also noted that he could help take attention off of A.J.
Brown and Romeo Doubs.
Dallas is worth watching as well. The Cowboys already have CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens, but their pass-heavy offense could still make room for another receiver.
And with the Giants on the schedule in Week 1, there’s the added wrinkle of intel. Slayton could provide some insight into new Giants coach John Harbaugh’s offense.
Tennessee rounds out the list, and the fit is pretty simple: the Titans need receiver help, and Slayton would reunite with offensive coordinator and former Giants coach Brian Daboll in Nashville. Two of Slayton’s best seasons came under Daboll in New York.
