A wild scene in the stands at Lumen Field overshadowed part of Wednesday night’s NFL season opener between the Seattle Seahawks and the New England Patriots, and it ended with a Patriots fan being arrested by police after a brutal beatdown.
The trouble started in section 314, where a Patriots fan reportedly tried to take empty seats that belonged to other spectators. When the actual seat owners came back, the visitor allegedly refused to leave and started jawing at the people around him. Stadium ushers were called over to sort it out before things got worse.
Instead, the confrontation turned violent. According to the footage, the unruly fan ran into and knocked over an elderly staff member, and the brawl quickly spiraled from there.
One clip showed someone nearly tumbling over the stadium railing as punches flew and several people piled on top of each other. Fans nearby watched in shock while the fight spilled across the row.
Security personnel and police officers eventually rushed in to take control of the section. By the end of it, the Patriots fan was in handcuffs.
The chaos in the stands came during a game that finished with Seattle pulling out a 13-10 win. Backup quarterback Drew Lock changed the momentum after Sam Darnold went down with an injury, then delivered the big blow in the fourth quarter with a 45-yard touchdown pass to Jaxon Smith-Njigba.
Seattle’s defense finished the job from there, clamping down on the Patriots late and putting Drake Maye under constant pressure. Maye threw three interceptions on the night.
