Patrick Willis didn’t just weigh in on the 49ers’ linebacker debate - he pretty much settled it with one line of praise for Fred Warner and Dre Greenlaw.
For years, San Francisco fans have argued over the best linebacker duo in franchise history: Willis and NaVorro Bowman, or Warner and Greenlaw. But when Willis joined Bowman on KNBR, he made it clear he sees something special in the current pair.
"One of the things that I admire is that they have taken the standard of excellence of linebacker play and raised it from where [Bowman and I] had it."
Willis added that watching Warner and Greenlaw work together in practice before the season brought back memories of the way he and Bowman played side by side.
That’s a strong endorsement coming from one half of one of the most feared linebacker tandems in football. And it says plenty about what Warner and Greenlaw have become for the 49ers defense over the years.
The comparison feels even more meaningful because Willis and Bowman are only about a decade removed from their own playing days. Rather than brushing off the next wave, Willis seems to recognize that Warner and Greenlaw have carried the standard forward.
Even in Week 1, the 49ers’ defense looked like it had a little more bite. Warner was back for his first game after breaking his ankle last season, and having Greenlaw back alongside him seemed to bring back some of the edge and toughness the unit had been missing.
Greenlaw, for his part, appears to have a renewed appreciation for San Francisco in his second stint with the team. After spending one season with the Denver Broncos, he returned with that fire restored.
So maybe the real takeaway isn’t which tandem gets the title. It’s that one great 49ers linebacker generation is openly saluting the next - and for fans, that’s a pretty good thing to watch.
