In a move reminiscent of past decisions, the Green Bay Packers have signed veteran defensive tackle Javon Hargrave to a substantial contract. Hargrave, who inked a four-year, $84 million deal with the San Francisco 49ers a few years back, is now on a two-year, $30 million journey with the Packers.
Hargrave made an immediate impact in his first season with the 49ers, racking up seven sacks and earning a Pro Bowl nod in 2023. It looked like San Francisco had found a cornerstone for their defensive line. However, a triceps injury in 2024 cut his season short, leading to his release as the 49ers opted to avoid the financial burden of his contract.
After a stint with the Minnesota Vikings, where he stayed relatively healthy but recorded only 3.5 sacks, Hargrave hit the free-agent market again. The Packers quickly snapped him up, committing $13 million to the 33-year-old. It's a gamble, considering the natural decline that can accompany a player's advancing age.
Hargrave's career has been marked by solid performances, including two Pro Bowl selections. But as the 49ers learned, these contracts can become burdensome.
San Francisco had to rethink their defensive strategy, bringing in young talent like Alfred Collins and C.J. West, and experienced players such as Jordan Elliott and Kalia Davis.
With Elliott now with the Tennessee Titans and Davis likely not returning, the 49ers traded with the Dallas Cowboys for Osa Odighizuwa, a move that should bolster their defensive interior.
For the Packers, the hope is that Hargrave can deliver a resurgence. While the risks are evident, Green Bay is banking on Hargrave's experience and past success to pay off. Only time will tell if this gamble will be worth it, but the Packers are certainly aware of the stakes involved.
