Could Kirk Cousins Be Heading to the Rams?
The NFL's offseason always brings its fair share of intrigue, and this year is no exception. With whispers of Kirk Cousins potentially joining the Los Angeles Rams, the quarterback carousel is spinning once again.
For years, San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan has been linked with Cousins, his former quarterback during their days with the Washington Commanders. Their history is well-documented, and Shanahan's admiration for Cousins is no secret. However, it seems that Sean McVay, head coach of the Rams and Shanahan's longtime friend, might be the one to bring Cousins to California.
At the recent NFL meetings in Phoenix, McVay hinted at a changing quarterback landscape for the Rams. While Jimmy Garoppolo's future with the team remains uncertain, McVay opened the door to the possibility of Cousins joining the Rams as a backup to Matthew Stafford.
"I don't know that," McVay responded when asked about Garoppolo's status. "It feels less likely than likely, but I don't want to rule that out. He's earned the right to take his time and decide his next chapter in football."
With Garoppolo likely moving on, McVay acknowledged the potential of exploring Cousins as an option. It's a move that could have Shanahan feeling a bit envious, given his past interest in Cousins.
McVay and Shanahan share a unique bond, having worked together in Washington, where they both had a front-row seat to Cousins' development. Shanahan's plans in 2017 initially included signing Cousins as a free agent in 2018, but the trade for Garoppolo from the New England Patriots altered that course. Since then, Cousins' name has frequently been linked to San Francisco, largely due to his relationship with Shanahan.
However, with the 49ers now committed to quarterbacks Brock Purdy and Mac Jones, the prospect of Cousins heading to the Bay Area seems unlikely. This opens the door for McVay to potentially fulfill what Shanahan once envisioned.
As the offseason unfolds, all eyes will be on Los Angeles to see if Cousins finds a new home with the Rams, adding yet another chapter to the ever-evolving quarterback narratives in the NFL.
