Marques Sigle Revealed What Sparked His 49ers Turnaround

San Francisco 49ers' sophomore safety Marques Sigle has made a remarkable comeback on the field, transforming from a benched rookie to a defensive force to be reckoned with this season.

Marques Sigle’s second NFL season is starting to look nothing like his first.

The 49ers gave the rookie safety a real shot early last year, starting him in the first six games. It didn’t stick.

Sigle ended up on the bench for the rest of the season, and his stock had taken a clear hit by the time he got to year two. But San Francisco still opened the 2026 season with him in the lineup for the first three games, even with Malik Mustapha and Ji’Ayir Brown back in the fold.

So far, that decision has paid off.

Through three weeks, Sigle has piled up 20 tackles. He has already matched his career high in tackles for loss and logged the first sack of his career in 2026.

In coverage, he has cut his yards per target allowed to 2.8, a massive jump from 11.9 last year. PFF has the clearest snapshot of the leap: his overall grade has gone from 36 as a rookie to 80 in his second season.

Sigle says the benching last year played a big part in the turnaround.

“I just say experience,” Sigle mentioned when discussing his impact. “All you need is reps.

Throughout the course, when I got sat, I just took that time to really just hone in on my skills, what I need to work on. I thought I had the skills; I just needed the time.”

That extra time seems to have changed everything. Sigle played 480 snaps as a rookie.

He’s already up to 192 snaps through three weeks this season, and there’s little indication he’s headed for the same fate as last year. San Francisco did pull him for a few snaps in Week 3, but the 49ers have also mixed in Mustapha for a drive or two to keep him involved.

The safety rotation now gives the 49ers three defenders with real starting experience. Sigle has 10 starts, Brown has 34, and Mustapha has 22.

Through three games, Brown has played 193 snaps, Sigle has 192, and Mustapha has 27. Among that group, Sigle has been the most consistent and the most disruptive on a down-to-down basis.

For a Kansas State product who looked like a possible bust after his first season, the change has been dramatic. He needed time to figure out what was going wrong. Now, he looks like a player the 49ers can build on.

49ers Turn To A Familiar Name As Receiver Depth Gets Tested

The 49ers are turning to a familiar face for some added help at wide receiver after Mike Evans went down with a rib injury. Dante Pettis, a former second-round pick by San Francisco in 2018, tried out for the team and is set to rejoin the roster, giving the 49ers a player who already knows the building and the demands that come with it.

Pettis has bounced around the league since his first stint in San Francisco, with stops on multiple NFL teams along the way. For a 49ers group that needs reliable depth, the move brings in a receiver with some history in the system and a chance to fill a needed spot while the wider picture at the position remains in flux. 49ers Injury Report Suddenly Raises A Bigger Week 4 Concern

The first practice report of the week gave the 49ers a familiar mix of caution and concern, with eight players sitting out as San Francisco began turning its attention to Denver. Christian McCaffrey was among the names on the list, though his absence was part of the teams usual rest pattern rather than a new setback, and the 49ers are trying to handle several nagging issues without letting them linger into the rest of the schedule.

Brandon Aiyuk, Dre Greenlaw and Javon White were also among those held out, dealing with injuries that range from rib and quad contusions to hamstring and knee problems. With the Broncos game first on the board and more important matchups waiting beyond it, the real concern for San Francisco is less about one missed practice than how many of these players can be managed safely without creating a bigger problem later in the season. Jordan Watkins Made His Case But The 49ers Just Complicated It

Jordan Watkins gave the 49ers something to think about in a hurry. After being inactive for the first two games, the rookie came back and made the most of his opportunity, finishing with two catches for 60 yards in a showing that fit neatly with what Kyle Shanahan has said he wants from his receivers. Shanahan praised Watkins for the way he ran routes, secured catches and contributed in the run game, all the little details that can help a young wideout earn trust quickly.

Still, the path forward is not exactly clear. San Francisco recently brought back Dante Pettis, adding another name to a receiver room where every snap can matter for a player trying to stick, and Watkins now has to keep building on a promising outing rather than simply live off it. For a player who just forced his way into the conversation, the next stretch may say a lot about whether this was a breakthrough or just the start of the battle. [Read more 🡒]
