Malik Mustapha Fighting For 49ers Role Again

Can Malik Mustapha bounce back to his rookie form and regain his standing on the 49ers' roster in 2026 amidst roster changes and heightened expectations?

The San Francisco 49ers are gearing up for the NFL Draft, and they've already tackled some key needs in free agency. While the signing spree isn't entirely over, it seems the major moves have been made. General Manager John Lynch hinted that re-signing Jauan Jennings might not be in the cards, suggesting the team is looking ahead.

Head Coach Kyle Shanahan was tight-lipped when asked which players need to step up this season. He chose not to single anyone out, saying, “I’m not gonna say a name, because I’m not gonna put that pressure on them.”

However, he’s confident that some young talents will rise to the occasion. Shanahan believes you can quickly spot the standouts: “When they come in, you’re like ‘Man, this guy’s a little bit different.’”

So, who needs to rebound for the 49ers in 2026? It's a tough call with so many variables.

There are players dealing with injuries or situations beyond their control, making it tricky to pinpoint just one. But if we had to choose, Malik Mustapha comes to mind.

As a rookie, Mustapha was a revelation, allowing just one completion on 11 targets. However, last season saw that number jump to 61 percent.

Despite fewer targets, his pass breakups dropped, and the consistency wasn't there.

Mustapha's talent is undeniable, and now that he's further removed from injury, there's every reason to believe he can elevate his game. His missed tackle rate increased by about seven percent last season, a number he’ll need to tighten up.

The return of Fred Warner and a stellar defensive line should bolster his performance. If Mustapha can channel his rookie form, the 49ers’ defense could see a significant upswing in 2026, with his resurgence playing a crucial role.
