Mac Jones likely didn't expect a snowball fight to stir up such a fuss. The San Francisco 49ers quarterback found himself in the middle of a wintry spectacle at Washington Square Park after a blizzard blanketed Manhattan.
Captured on video, Jones was seen enthusiastically hurling snowballs, later sharing the moment on TikTok with a playful nod to his arm strength, calling it “Snowball launchmaxxing.” When a fan praised his accuracy, Jones cheekily replied, “Absolute rippers.”
However, the lighthearted event took a more serious turn. Some participants began targeting police officers with snowballs, prompting a response from Zohran Mamdani, who urged respect for officers working tirelessly during the storm.
“Officers, like all city workers, have been out in a historic blizzard, keeping New Yorkers safe and cars moving. Treat them with respect,” Mamdani stated.
“If anyone’s catching a snowball, it’s me.”
Jones wasn't implicated in the snowball mischief aimed at officers. Yet, the incident escalated when the NYPD arrested 27-year-old social media creator Gusmane Coulibaly, charging him with obstructing governmental administration and harassment for allegedly joining in the snowball barrage. The police also released images of three individuals they wish to question further.
Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch didn’t mince words, labeling the actions as “disgraceful” and “criminal.”
Despite the uproar, Jones hasn’t commented beyond his initial playful posts. For him, the snowball fight seemed like a refreshing break from the gridiron.
The 27-year-old quarterback had a strong 2025 season, stepping in for the injured Brock Purdy and leading the 49ers to a 5-3 record. His impressive performance has sparked trade rumors, with general manager John Lynch lauding Jones’ impact.
“Mac made this place better,” Lynch said. “He was outstanding this season.
He picked us up in a huge way.”
Lynch also highlighted Jones’ positive influence on the team, noting, “He’s got an infectious attitude that affects everybody on our team.”
While the snowball fight might soon fade from memory, it’s left an impression in New York. Meanwhile, Jones remains with the 49ers, his future still a hot topic in the NFL.
