Kyle Shanahan Knows What Makes This 49ers Test So Dangerous

As the 49ers prepare to face the Commanders, Kyle Shanahan recognizes Jayden Daniels as a formidable quarterback poised to test their defense on Monday night.

Kyle Shanahan doesn’t need much tape to understand the challenge Jayden Daniels presents for the 49ers on Monday night. The San Francisco coach said Thursday that Washington’s quarterback has already shown enough to stand out as one of the league’s toughest players to handle.

Shanahan’s praise started with Daniels’ work from the pocket, where the Commanders quarterback has impressed with his accuracy, arm strength and calm under pressure.

“Since he came in the league until now, Jayden’s got a chance to be one of the better quarterbacks in this league without a doubt,” Shanahan said. “If you take away the running element of him, just how he plays in the pocket is so natural with how accurate he is, how strong his arm is, how poised he is going through a progression, how fearless he is hanging in there and taking a hit, keeping his eyes down the field.

“He’s got the speed and the coordination to win games only with his legs, which means you want to keep him in the pocket and not let him out because he can beat you with his legs. However, he’s a very scary quarterback in the pocket just playing the position. So, he’s got all the tools to be as good as there is.”

Daniels backed up that reputation as a rookie in 2024, when he threw for 3,568 yards with 25 touchdowns and nine interceptions, earned a Pro Bowl nod and won Offensive Rookie of the Year. His 2025 season has been more limited because of injuries, with seven starts producing 1,262 yards, eight touchdowns and three interceptions as Washington finished 2-5.

Even with an elbow injury slowing him this year, Daniels has been efficient when he has been on the field. Through three games, he has 459 passing yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions.

That’s part of why Shanahan expects Washington to be a serious test for San Francisco, even with the Commanders sitting at 1-3-1.

“I know we’ve got a really good team coming in here who’s as hungry as can be and I know it’s going to be probably our biggest challenge so far,” he said.

Kyle Juszczyk Just Reignited A Ugly 49ers Controversy

A fresh layer was added to an old 49ers grievance after Bills safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson got tossed in Week 6 for spitting on Raiders tight end Brock Bowers. The incident immediately brought back memories in San Francisco, where Kyle Juszczyk said Gardner-Johnson had done the same to him in a game last season, a claim that had already helped fuel some hard feelings around the league.

Gardner-Johnson pushed back on the accusation, but the latest ejection only gave the story new life for 49ers fans who remember how it played out the first time. With one ugly moment already on the record, the lingering question is less about the punishment Gardner-Johnson just received and more about what comes next for a controversy that clearly was never fully put to rest. 49ers Face A Costly Linebacker Test At The Worst Time

A linebacker room already under pressure now has one more wrinkle to sort out, and it comes at a bad time for San Francisco. Dre Greenlaw will miss the next game after his Week 5 ejection for headbutting an opponent, leaving the 49ers to adjust defensively as they prepare for Washington.

The immediate answer appears to be rookie Jaden Dugger, who is expected to step into Greenlaws role for the matchup with the Commanders. For a defense that leans on Greenlaws presence and experience, the timing makes this more than a simple depth-chart shuffle, especially with the appeal process having already run its course. 49ers Could Face One Sneaky Problem On Monday Night

The 49ers are set to host the Washington Commanders on Monday night at Levis Stadium, and the setup looks more like a late-fall Bay Area evening than a weather worry. Temperatures are expected to dip into the upper 50s by kickoff, with stadium gates opening in the afternoon for fans making their way in for prime-time football.

Still, there is one small element that could matter once the game gets going. The forecast calls for minimal rain, but the wind could become the more noticeable factor as the night wears on, and that can have an impact on both the passing game and any decisions that reach into field-goal range.
