John Lynch Just Kept 49ers Fans Guessing On Brandon Aiyuk

Amidst a 'unique' contract quandary and a need for receiver depth, 49ers GM John Lynch weighs the potential return of Brandon Aiyuk, emphasizing the complexities and possibilities involved.

San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch isn’t closing the door on Brandon Aiyuk, even if the whole situation around the wide receiver has become anything but ordinary.

Speaking during a radio appearance on KNBR, Lynch described the Aiyuk matter as something without a clear blueprint. As transcribed by ESPN’s Nick Wagoner, he said the team is still working through it with the NFL Management Council.

“This is kind of a unique situation, not one you have, so there’s really no playbook. But I always go back to what’s my charge, what’s my job?

My job is to look out for the best interest of the 49ers. And as such, in this particular situation, we’re working with the NFL Management Council to navigate through a different situation.

And so it’s fluid,” Lynch said.

When the possibility of Aiyuk returning came up, Lynch didn’t shut it down.

“Yeah, of course. I think everything’s possible.”

Aiyuk, a first-round pick by San Francisco in 2020, has not played in the NFL since tearing his ACL and MCL in 2024. The 49ers voided his 2026 contract in July 2025 after he missed rehab sessions and team check-ins. He was later placed on the reserve/left squad list in December.

Last week, Aiyuk hired agent Drew Rosenhaus with the goal of getting reinstated to the NFL.

The 49ers could certainly use help at receiver with Mike Evans sidelined by an Achilles injury, but Lynch also has to weigh the chemistry of a 6-1 team that has already found its rhythm. Given how badly Aiyuk’s first run with the club ended, this is a situation the 49ers will handle carefully.

George Kittle Is Still Chasing More 49ers History

George Kittle is heading into his 10th season with the 49ers, and the rsum keeps getting longer. Drafted in 2017, he has already carved out a place in franchise history, and the latest milestone only adds to the sense that he is still building something special in San Francisco.

Even after working his way back from an Achilles injury, Kittle has remained one of the offenses most reliable playmakers, and he has said he wants to spend his entire career with the 49ers. For a player who has already passed one major franchise mark, the question now is how much more history he can stack before this run is over. [Read more 🡒]

49ers Could Still Make One Deadline Swing Fans Never Saw Coming

With the NFL trade deadline drawing near, the 49ers are once again in the familiar position of being linked to help rather than just waiting to see what the market does. The conversation around San Francisco has centered on possible upgrades from around the league, with the idea being simple enough: if there is a way to strengthen the roster before the stretch run, the 49ers will at least be in the mix.

The names being tossed around reflect the range of possibilities, from defensive help to offensive depth and even a familiar edge presence. Nothing is official, and this is still firmly in the speculative stage, but the fact that San Francisco can be mentioned in the same breath as so many different types of targets says plenty about where the team stands as the deadline approaches. 49ers Have A Familiar Edge In The NFCs Biggest Race

The 49ers have built a habit of showing up when the calendar turns serious, and that matters again as the NFC race tightens. Since 2022, their November and December regular-season work has generally been a strength, with the kind of late-season consistency that has helped keep them in the hunt for the conferences top seed.

San Francisco has also tended to come out of the bye ready to play, which only adds to the sense that this team knows how to navigate the stretch run. The upcoming schedule still has to be played, but the 49ers enter it with a familiar edge and a recent track record that makes them look well positioned to keep control of the No. 1-seed chase.
