One of the biggest questions facing the 49ers right now has a very familiar name attached to it: George Kittle.
The star tight end remains one of the defining pieces of the San Francisco offense, the kind of player who changes the temperature of a game the moment he steps on the field. When he’s available, the 49ers feel it. When he isn’t, that absence stands out just as much.
On Tuesday, Alex Kay of Bleacher Report took a swing at projecting when several injured NFL standouts might get back into action, and Kittle was among the names he highlighted. The short version: a Week 1 return is possible, but not the most likely outcome.
Kittle has already been activated from the PUP list and is still working his way back from the torn Achilles he suffered in January. That timeline puts him in position to return sometime in September. He had been hoping to suit up for the 49ers’ Week 1 opener against the Rams in Australia, but he recently said that missing that game would not be a major setback.
Given the long trip and the unusual setup for the Australia game, San Francisco could decide to play it safe and keep him out of Week 1. If that happens, the Dolphins in Week 2 would be the next target.
Kay sees the same basic path, even if he allows for the possibility that Kittle could be ready for the opener. His read is that Week 2 is far more realistic.
"The team will settle back into a conventional routine after returning stateside, benefitting from a three-game homestand that begins with a Week 2 matchup against the Miami Dolphins," he states. "If he ends up sitting out Week 1, expect Kittle to make his 2026 debut during this contest."
