George Kittle has never been shy about the appeal of playing NFL games overseas, and he’s got two European venues in mind if the 49ers ever land another international assignment.
Speaking exclusively to 49ers on SI’s Henry Cheal, the San Francisco tight end said Germany would be his first pick. Kittle said he recently spent time in Munich and came away impressed.
"I think the first one in my head I'd love to in Germany. I visited Munich for the first time this past year and I had a great time there. So, wherever there's a big stadium [Allianz Arena], that'd be fun,"
Kittle didn’t stop there. He also singled out Manchester United’s home ground as another place he’d love to play.
"Or wherever Manchester United [Old Trafford] plays because those games look absolutely crazy. Because I just know, like, soccer fans are actually insane and that's a compliment to you guys.
But I would love to play in front of that crowd. That'd be really fun at some point in my life."
The NFL’s international footprint keeps growing, with the league set to expand its slate in 2026. England and Germany remain on the schedule, while Mexico and Spain are back in the mix, and Brazil plus France and Australia are getting first-ever regular-season games.
Australia is the destination Kittle is targeting for Week 1 with the 49ers, though that’s tied to his Achilles injury. The outlook sounds encouraging, and there’s a real chance he could return sooner than expected.
There are nine international games this season, and commissioner Roger Goodell has already talked about pushing that number to 16 so every NFL team can play one game outside the United States each year.
Both of Kittle’s preferred venues carry major weight. Allianz Arena and Old Trafford each seat more than 70,000, and each brings a distinct atmosphere rooted in rich soccer tradition. Germany has already been a proven success for the NFL, while Manchester would offer something new for the league’s UK push beyond its long-running London setup.
London has been the NFL’s regular-season home in England, but a game in Manchester would widen the league’s reach and place it in one of the biggest stages in English football.
The international series keeps getting bigger, but as the league spreads its wings, player safety still has to stay at the center of the conversation.

49ers May Have Found Needed Edge Depth Behind Nick Bosa
San Franciscos edge room has long been built around Nick Bosa, but the next layer matters just as much for a defense that has had to live with injury concerns up front. One name worth keeping in the conversation is Minnesota edge rusher Anthony Smith, a sturdy, power-based defender whose reputation is rooted more in controlling the run game and setting the edge than in flashing off the ball.
Smiths profile is the kind that can appeal to a team looking for a dependable floor: 12.5 sacks, All-Big 10 second-team recognition, and the sort of physical traits that translate well on early downs. He is not the most twitchy pass rusher in the class, and his lateral movement and counter moves remain areas to watch, but that same profile could make him a sensible developmental fit if the 49ers are thinking ahead to the 2027 NFL Draft and the depth chart behind Bosa. 49ers Already Have A Christian McCaffrey Problem To Solve
Christian McCaffrey is already on the sideline with minor tightness, and the 49ers backfield depth is looking thinner than they would like as the season approaches. Behind him, the group is still trying to sort out health concerns and limited experience, with Isaac Guerendo on the PUP list and the team lacking a trustworthy, proven option it can lean on if McCaffrey needs a breather early in the year.
Jordan James and Kaelon Black are both dealing with injuries, which only adds to the uncertainty around the opening stretch and reinforces how fragile the room feels right now. For a team that wants to manage McCaffrey carefully over the long haul, the next move may not be about waiting on internal answers at all, but about finding a veteran who can stabilize the depth chart before Week 1 arrives. 49ers Backfield Shuffle Suddenly Put All Eyes On McCaffrey
San Franciscos backfield has already taken on a different look in camp, with Khalil Herbert released after taking part in training camp and one preseason game. It is a quick turn for a running back who only arrived two weeks ago, but the roster math has changed fast as the 49ers sort through injuries at the position and try to keep enough healthy bodies on the field.
The timing has naturally pushed Christian McCaffrey back into the center of the conversation. Other backs are dealing with injuries, leaving Sincere McCormick and Zamir White as the only healthy runners on hand, and every move now feels connected to how soon the group can get back to full strength. For a team that depends on stability in the backfield, the next practice schedule could say plenty about where McCaffrey stands and how much more shuffling is still coming. [Read more 🡒]
