George Kittle Is Still Chasing More 49ers History

As George Kittle continues to make history with the 49ers, he reflects on his journey and future aspirations in an exclusive interview.

George Kittle has already carved out a place in 49ers history, and now he’s added another line to a resume that keeps growing in San Francisco.

Earlier this season against the Denver Broncos, the 33-year-old passed Vernon Davis to become the franchise’s all-time leader in touchdown receptions by a tight end. That kind of milestone would matter anywhere, but with the 49ers, it carries extra weight.

“Anytime you’re on a record list within the 49ers organization, I think that’s a pretty special list to be part of,” Kittle told 49ers on SI’s Henry Cheal.

“It’s such a historic franchise, with so many amazing football players who have played here.

“Being in my tenth year of my career here, it’s really exciting. It’s always fun, and it’s something I’m incredibly proud of.

“It’s an honour just to be on the same list as Vernon Davis. You’re also on lists alongside Jerry Rice and Terrell Owens. It’s fascinating because those are guys I grew up watching, and the fact that I’m now mentioned alongside them is really cool.

“It’s important to appreciate those achievements and take a moment to enjoy them. At the same time, I know there’s still work to be done and more left to achieve. There’s more meat on the bone, which I genuinely believe.

“But when you take a moment to sit back and think about it, I feel incredibly lucky and blessed to be in the position I’m in and to be where I am today.

That achievement arrives as Kittle enters his 10th season in the red and gold, a run that began when Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch picked him in the fifth round of the 2017 NFL Draft. He’s now part of the 10-year club, another marker of just how long he’s been central to what the 49ers do.

And the numbers this season suggest he’s not slowing down. After spending the offseason rehabbing an Achilles injury, Kittle has come back looking sharp, with five touchdowns and 425 receiving yards already on the board.

Kittle has also made it clear he wants to spend his entire career in San Francisco. For now, the story keeps moving in the same direction: more production, more records, and more chances to add to a legacy that already has him standing with the franchise’s best.

49ers Could Still Make One Deadline Swing Fans Never Saw Coming

With the NFL trade deadline drawing near, the 49ers are once again in the familiar position of being linked to help rather than just waiting to see what the market does. The conversation around San Francisco has centered on possible upgrades from around the league, with the idea being simple enough: if there is a way to strengthen the roster before the stretch run, the 49ers will at least be in the mix.

The names being tossed around reflect the range of possibilities, from defensive help to offensive depth and even a familiar edge presence. Nothing is official, and this is still firmly in the speculative stage, but the fact that San Francisco can be mentioned in the same breath as so many different types of targets says plenty about where the team stands as the deadline approaches. 49ers Have A Familiar Edge In The NFCs Biggest Race

The 49ers have built a habit of showing up when the calendar turns serious, and that matters again as the NFC race tightens. Since 2022, their November and December regular-season work has generally been a strength, with the kind of late-season consistency that has helped keep them in the hunt for the conferences top seed.

San Francisco has also tended to come out of the bye ready to play, which only adds to the sense that this team knows how to navigate the stretch run. The upcoming schedule still has to be played, but the 49ers enter it with a familiar edge and a recent track record that makes them look well positioned to keep control of the No. 1-seed chase. 49ers Win Now Push Could Bring Proven Help To Both Levels

The 49ers strong start in 2026 has only sharpened the conversation around how far a veteran-heavy roster can be pushed in a win-now season. With one of the leagues oldest groups, San Francisco is being viewed through the lens of urgency, and ESPNs Bill Barnwell floated the idea that the team could use the trade deadline to add proven help on defense.

The appeal is obvious: a safety with a long track record of impact and a defensive end who has spent years making life difficult for opposing quarterbacks. Both would bring experience and credibility to a unit that already expects to contend, and the question now is whether San Francisco decides to lean even harder into the present as the deadline approaches.
