Fred Warner Just Reminded 49ers Fans What This Defense Was Missing

Despite last season's setback, Fred Warner's prowess earns him top linebacker spot in ESPN rankings, setting high expectations for his return.

Fred Warner is still sitting at the top of the linebacker mountain, even after an injury wiped out most of his 2025 season.

That was the message from ESPN’s latest ranking of the NFL’s top 10 off-ball linebackers, where Warner landed No. 1 again in Jeremy Fowler’s annual poll of league executives, scouts and coaches. For the 49ers, it’s another reminder that one of their most important defenders still carries elite status across the league.

“Rarely does a player miss most of a season due to injury and maintain his standing in our top 10,” Fowler wrote. “Warner, however, earned around 70% of the first-place votes.

It was a slight drop from the previous year, but his status in the position hierarchy remains clear. Warner has been an All-Pro four times since 2020, second only to edge rusher Myles Garrett (five) during that span.

Warner’s 2025 season was derailed in Week 6 by a dislocated ankle that was first announced as season-ending. Even so, there was a chance he could have returned if San Francisco had beaten Seattle in the divisional round.

Before the injury, he was producing at a high level. In just six games, Warner recorded 51 tackles, three passes defensed, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery.

“He diagnoses faster than anyone,” an NFL coordinator said. “That's really his secret sauce. Processes the game at an incredibly fast level.”

For San Francisco, Warner’s return is part of a bigger picture heading into 2026. The 49ers are also expecting a boost from a dynamic duo of coordinators, and getting several injured stars back could set the stage for a much stronger season.

Training camp later this month should give the first real look at how all of it comes together.

49ers May Finally Have The Defensive Answer Fans Have Been Waiting For

As the 49ers head toward the start of the 2026 season, the conversation around the roster is still being shaped by the Brandon Aiyuk contract dispute on one side and the need for more stability on the other. On defense, the focus is turning to Alfred Collins, the 2025 draft pick who is expected to become a much bigger part of the line as San Francisco looks for growth from its young players and a cleaner bill of health after an injury-hit 2025.

Collins is the kind of interior presence the 49ers have been waiting to see blossom, especially with veteran Osa Odighizuwa alongside him to help anchor the front. If Collins takes the next step, it could give San Francisco a far more disruptive defensive identity and make life harder for opposing offenses from the jump, which is exactly the sort of answer this team has been searching for as camp and the regular season draw closer. Robert Saleh Just Said Something 49ers Fans Will Not Ignore

Robert Salehs name still carries weight around the 49ers, and his latest comments only keep that conversation alive. After leaving San Francisco to take over the Titans, Saleh recently looked back on his second stint with the club and pointed to the kind of resiliency and leadership that have long made the building stand out, a reminder of why his time there left such a strong impression.

For 49ers fans, the interesting part is not just the praise, but what it could mean down the road. If Saleh ever finds himself back on the market, San Francisco would make sense as a possible landing spot again, especially if a defensive coordinator opening comes up and the organization is looking for a familiar voice who already knows the room. 49ers Fans Hit With Another Disturbing Brandon Aiyuk Twist

Brandon Aiyuk has already spent plenty of this offseason in the rumor mill, but a troubling social media post has now pushed the 49ers wideout into a different kind of spotlight. The video has stirred backlash around the league and among San Francisco fans, adding another layer of unease to a situation that was already being watched closely because of his uncertain future.

The controversy also comes as the speculation around a possible move to Washington continues to linger, even if not everyone is buying it. Former NFL receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh has publicly brushed aside the idea of Aiyuk landing with the Commanders, leaving the bigger questions around the receivers next step and what comes next for the 49ers still unresolved.
